Boy racer 'death traps' forced off road
    24.10.05 1.00pm

Seventeen cars, including several described by police as "death traps", were ordered off the road over the weekend during the second phase of a major offensive against boy racers. One car was so dangerous that it had to be towed away while another had lowered springs that fell out when inspected.

The campaign - conducted in the western Bay of Plenty on Friday and Saturday nights - targeted vehicle modifications, defects and noise and resulted in 30 cars being pulled over and thoroughly examined. Of those, 17 were found in breach of the law.

Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said today: "This is extremely bad news because these are the vehicles that will cause the crashes out there."

Of those that failed, one was in such bad condition it had to be towed from the testing site while another had to be put on a truck to Napier where it had come from.

"Some of the cars were like death traps, one had lowered springs that fell out when it was inspected."

The rest were issued with pink or green stickers banning them from the roads until they get the necessary alterations.

The Labour weekend operation followed the first phase the previous weekend in which 128 infringement notices and eight traffic offence notices requiring a court appearance were issued. The worst car found was described by police as a "coffin on wheels".

Mr Campion said most owners had failed cars because they had made the modifications themselves and had not done them properly.

For the sake of my three sons (and maybe daughter, too) I do wish they would tighten up the laws a bit here. I know not every kid turns into a hoon but ... it is a worry when so many people here seem to think it is 'acceptable' teen-driver behaviour.

They built skateboard parks to keep the kids from skateboarding on the streets, so if they cannot successfully tighten up laws why not construct purpose-built areas (away from residential properties) for the kids to test out their driving skills, preferably with helmets on like cyclists?

It should never be deemed acceptable to go around killing yourself or others in the name of having fun. ?

I would agree about trying to get the hoons off the public roads and onto some sort of racetrack where like-minded people can batter their brains out together. ?At least then it's contained and everyone else can go about their business in relative safety. ?If the hoons think it's fine to tear along the highways and byways and create havoc, what sort of adult drivers will they make? ?They don't seem to be learning from their mistakes and, without being shown the error of their ways, they haven't a hope in hell of becoming decent drivers. ?

An adult driver, having once been a hoon, will see no wrong in youngsters following in his footsteps. ?It's just perpetuating the culture. ?If hoons insist on driving recklessly then the only alternative is to get them off the roads and let them burn off their fire in a safer environment.

Seems you're never too young to start. Sounds like Mum was quite happy about it, too. Proud even?

    Ten-year-old boy caught joyriding
    14 February 2006

Police apprehended a 10-year-old boy after he took a car for a joyride around the streets of Temuka last week. The child, who found the keys in the ignition of the parked car, was caught when he returned it to the place he borrowed it from. His mother, who taught the child how to drive last year, said the boy was a good driver, Sergeant Paul Scoble said.

Police are working with the child's parents to deal with the matter. Mr Scoble said the incident served as a warning against leaving car keys in parked vehicles.

In another incident, a 14-year-old boy was caught drink-driving on the streets of Temuka at 1.05am on Sunday morning. After he was stopped and breath-tested by police, he was found to have excessive breath alcohol of 234 micrograms per litre of breath. He has been referred to youth aid.

Also last week, a 19-year-old male had his vehicle impounded after he was caught driving past the school on Main Avenue at 70kmh. He was driving after his licence had already been suspended.

    ::)

The report makes it sound as if it was all the fault of that person who left their keys in the car. String him up for putting temptation in the way!!!

Strange how lax the attitude here with "boys will be boys". Maybe it is allowing healthy testosterone "expression"(?) No doubt I will find out, what with having three boys. ::) However, I would go ballistic if one took a car for a spin.

Reminds me of a law in Damascus. We were told (one of many such warnings) that, if someone fell or tried to commit suicide by jumping from, say, the 10th storey of an apartment block and just happened to land on your car and die, you would be at fault because you left your car there in the first place :o . No mention though of prosecuting the local council whose pavement he would have hit if you hadn?t parked your car there.

    Strange place, Syria :-/

Surely that rules out most of the extreme sports for which NZ is famed for.

Boys will be boys it will never change, and in fairness, most of them are sitting in car parks chatting and listening to music rather than rasing around a break neck speeds. Take the UK...it's hard to make a 1.0 Nova go that fast especialy with the excess weight of all those body kits and spot lights

Not excusing it, but the voice of reason must be heard

Surely that rules out most of the extreme sports for which NZ is famed for. Extreme sports aren't usually carried out on public roads where innocent people are tootling along going about their everyday business.  With extreme sports, it's usually the participants that get killed, not often taking spectators with them.

You just have to read some of the posts scattered about this forum to know that, for every group of young drivers chatting in carparks, there's several more out on the roads and lanes, burning up the tarmac and noisily at that. And this is NZ we're talking about.

Not excusing it, but the voice of reason must be heard.  I wonder where the voice of reason will be when they come roaring past your place in the middle of the night, rattling your windows or flying past your kids when they're taking their lives in their hands, trying to cross the road (in later years, of course).
You're not a closet hoon by any chance, are you?  Chomping at the bit to join in the fun?  You're the right age group, anyway and would fit right in.   ;) .

I have to admit I with Stevey on this one..

I haven't joined in before now as I know it's a very emotive subject..
It would be interesting to get some statistics on exaclty how many "spectators" have been killed by these boys with their souped up toys..
