i've been meaning to ask..

is there a DIY culture in NZ similar to here?

I'm sure you know what I mean.. power tool envy and an unhealthy fixation with the relative merits of 12mm MDF and WBP Plywood?

Since I started tarting this place up ready for selling i've found myself being dragged into this culture...
and , rather worryingly, i'm quite enjoying it..

how much is a 3' x 2' sheet of 1/2" MDF?
?6.99 in Homebase.. (Bargain!)

Is there what!

Here in christchurch there is the shrine to home DIY a place called Bunnings. There on the weekend you see home handy people with glazed eyes full of desire and partners usually with glazed eyes full of boredom trolling the isles.

Actually its a very smart move where they have bunnings as in the same complex is a womans clothing outlet. So the wifes get to spend as well :)

Otherwise Mitre 10 and placemakers are the big home renovation shops. Anyway I bet my power drill is bigger than your power drill :-)

These don't really give any idea of prices but might be handy for DIY tips.

http://www.bunnings.co.nz/site/default.asp?dealer=5709 - very Oz oriented and you have to pick your way through the site to find our where the NZ stores are located.

Thanks everyone for the interesting replies.
Here's a question to ponder over (and let us know the answer please)!

Our two sons want a pool table for Xmas (a decent pub style one).
Do we buy one here and ship it over or buy one in NZ? What is the cheapest option :icon_question:

You are all so good at this I'm sure someone will know the answer.
We await with bated breath.

I would have no idea regarding the price of pool tables either in the UK or NZ, but the first question to consider should be whether you would be shipping your household effects in a container and, if so, would there be room left for a pool table? Perhaps some of those members already in NZ can furnish you with some idea of prices but, meanwhile here?s a couple of links to online sports shops, so you can see what?s on offer. Most shops under this category don?t appear to have websites.

http://www.snookershop.co.nz/tables.htm - located in Christchurch. Has prices.
http://www.bartonmcgill.co.nz/ - based in Auckland and has email contact address. No prices.

Thanks Mother Bear and Ady for the links - will have a look at them.
In the meantime if anyone else has any ideas please let us know.
By the way we are having a container but we don't know yet if it will be full so may be the option to take one over if they are cheaper to buy in the UK.
