Default Tax Back

Does anyone know what amount of tax you recieve back when leaving the country? Someone has told us you get it all back, from what you have paid since April. Some say just a percentage.

I believe if you have earnt 10K (after april) before you leave then you will be taxed as if you had earned 10K for the entire year.

Not too sure on this one ... but I do not think you can claim anything back at the moment because you are still UK tax payers until you have a work visa/permit and address in New Zealand.

Even though you know you want to settle in NZ, in your circumstances you will be just visitors at first and as such will continue to pay tax in the UK and still be able to claim benefits. That is certainly our case.

I would have thought that any tax payback will have to be applied for from NZ when you know you can stay.

Default Tax Back

Thanks for that Glenda, that is what I thought, but my family allowance is to stop after three months, and as we are out of the country until after the start of the new tax year we are entitled to some of the tax payed, apparently. Just looking into it all now.

Be good if we can get it back though. :icon_biggrin:

any tax rebate will be claimed from the UK not from NZ. You just write to your tax office and explain the situation, they will then send you a cheque, or maybe these days pay it direct into a UK bank account.

Default Tax Back

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/p85.pdf

This is the form that you fill in to claim income tax back. This will be calculated on your earnings from the 6th April, as if it is your total earnings in the year.

If you have been paid by PAYE and have not worked the full 12 months, there is a high chance you will get some tax back, as the tax deducted from your / weekly payments is calculated as if you were working for the full 12 months by for example splitting the tax free personal allowance over the 12 months.
