    The may be a dumb question but what Nationality do Kiwis have?

    UK/England/Scotland/Northern Ireland are all British

    but what are Kiwis, a Kiwi is a slang term not an official nationality and although I have obviously heard the term "New Zealander" have never heard the term "New Zealandish"

    :icon_lol: I think they're probably New Zealanders. At least that's what I've heard them being called. And don't worry, no question is a stupid question on the forums. I can guarantee someone else is always glad you've asked! :icon_wink:

    A person from New Zealand is called a New Zealander, their Nationality is New Zealand.

    Doesn't sound right, but that's what it is!

    You only have to think of embassy names to discover nationality:

    British Embassy
    American Embassy
    Australian Embassy
    Polish Embassy
    New Zealand Embassy

    etc, etc...

    I thought people from England were POM's? :icon_wink:

    And Australia = Ozzies

    America = Yanks

    But seriously. The name is "New Zealander" and that is commonly replaced with Kiwi.

    New Zealander is the term for a person of the nationality New Zealand.
    American is the term for a person of the nationality USA (or you can spell it out. Either way people hate it)

    They don't consider much slang here in NZ. "It's just the way we speak" as my boss stated. So Kiwi doesn't qualify as slang per NZers. And NZers should know, they are Kiwis.

    OK, I know that to the Brits, all US Americans are Yanks, but that is more specifically applied to New Englanders or more broadly to Northerners. I believe its an Anglicization of a French term (thus probably derogatory). Anyway, to those of us whose families came from the South, them's is fightin' words! ;-)

    Didnt that term derive from the north/south divide (civil war?) ?

    I thought that was the Yankies vs Confederates?

    Forgive my clear lack of understanding for American history!

    Yep, Yankees vs. Rebels; Federals vs. Confederates. :) During the Civil War the Yankees were the Northerners. Now I guess Yanks are pretty much any American, at least to a Brit. ;) I think it's kinda funny hearing Americans referred to as Yanks. :icon_lol:

    Oddly enough, the one comment about 'America = Yanks' came from an American!

    We have the same problem with a lot of people too though, thinking anyone from Britain must be English, even though Britain is made up of 4 individual countries (Scotland, England, Wales and N. Ireland)!

    Scotland = Scottish
    England = English
    Wales = Welsh
    Ireland = Irish

    As for the term Pom, really speaking, the British shouldnt be alone in this name. Pom originated many, many moons ago, when British immigrants started to arrive in Australia. Some clever Aussie thought that the word 'immigrant' rhymed rather well with 'pomegranate', and so people arriving on the boat were dubbed 'pomegranates', 'Poms' or 'Pomes'.

    It's true, I tell ya!
