Tempory Work in Biotech

I'd like to work in NZ for about 1 year doing research/biotech/pharmaceutics, ect before going to graduate school for neuroscience back in the US or in Sweden.

I understand that Lab techs are in shortage. But do I need to get a job offer before I can get a work visa? Does the 'points indicator' apply to my situation?

Currently I'm making US $13.00/hr working for a university, but the equivalent job in the private sector would be about double that. My concern is that I need to start paying back some of my student loans. What kind of salary can I expect working for a university or company in NZ as a lab tech or research assistant?
