Default What to bring

I was planning of getting rid of most stuff except personal items and buying new out there, but on another thread it seeems that some may be worth taking such as fridges and freezers as they are alot more expensive out there

what else has anyone wished they had taken or were glad that they did because of either the price difference or availability

Hmmm, well this may depend on you and how attached to your belongings you are?, is it worth the shipping costs?, are you a family? etc etc.

Most say bring it all but my friends (family of four) who moved out last year, wish they hadn't bothered, they say they had replaced most of their stuff before their container arrived.

Certain things are expensive though such as lawnmowers and paint. I'm sure some of the peeps who are already in NZ will be able to fill you in better.

We are still undecided ourselves so this thread will be helpful to us as well :icon_biggrin:

Hi All,

When we came to NZ, we brought nothing with us, apart from a few personal items (about 10 cardboard boxes full), so we had to start from scratch. If you're particularly attached to your telly/fridge/sofa, then by all means, have it shipped out here (you will have to change the plugs on any electrical items, and your telly may have to be adjusted.....), but we found things relatively cheap to buy out here, especially when you take into account how much it would cost to have your stuff shipped over. And of course, unless you are renting a furnished property for the first few weeks, you will have to either buy or rent stuff to survive until your things arrive from the UK (then you have either spent lots of money renting items, or you'll end up with two of almost everything!) :icon_eek: icon_exclaim.gif .

We used Bargate International to bring our stuff over. They were very helpful and quite cheap - their phone number is on a recent thread on the forum (a posting by Taffy), but if you can't find it, I can get it for you.

Petrol mowers are very expensive (start from approx $600) but we picked up a decent electric one for about $250.
Paint is very expensive but unless you're planning on shipping that over from the UK, there's no way around it, unless you either use wallpaper or simply don't decorate! :icon_wink:

That's my HO anyway!

Hi all,

Personally, I wish we had brought our American Fridge Freezer with us (very attached to it, i was; went through the same grieving process for the cash I had to hand over for a new one) the exact same fridge out here was double the cost!

As for lawnmowers, it all depends on whether cleaning your own for Maff, outways the cost of a new/second hand one... or you could just buy a goat! :icon_lol:

Basically you will find some things that are cheaper and some that are more expensive... should even itself out to be more or less the same as UK for cost of living. Anywho... that's what we have found, in the three months we've been here.

I think if you're looking to replace your white goods, you should check out Farmers and Rentavision (plus any others you can think of) first for prices of all Fisher & Paykel white goods... at least then you can compare against the cost of shipping and make an informed decision. :icon_idea:

The biggest savings, we have found, are keeping the kids occupied... with the beach only steps away, there is loads of FREE fun to be had. Best wrap up in a wet suit now that Winter is on it's way though! :icon_confused:

The difference in the size of fridges between the US and NZ was one of the first things I noticed. You can get em big here, but for the most part they are smaller. Like just a little bigger than the floor fridge ($90-$130US) you might have at your office in some cases!

And where are the microwaveable hotdogs and jam without seeds to put in the fridge!? And grape jam. mmm. Maybe that's why Kiwis can get away with smaller fridges. :icon_wink:

Sure, Kiwis say "jam without seeds" = processed
Well, I say "strong minded" = bossy

James turns his cheek waiting for his deserved slap from a "strong minded" woman :smiley15:
