I would like to get a place out in the countryside, but because of my job (computer programmer) I expect I will work in a city. Is there much culture of commuting an hour or more to get to work, or does everyone live close to where they work?

Commuting for an hour or more?! Blimey, you could live WAY out of a city if you wanted an hours commute!!

Once you leave most of the major centres, within about 30kms of the outskirts lands you in the wilderness!

Probably with the exception of Auckland, you wouldnt need to have more than a 30 minute commute to be out far enough to be away from 'city life'.

Currently I have about 45 min commute, though when I lived closer to work it was often an hour because of the traffic congestion.
How do house prices compare city to countryside? Ideally would love a place with some land

An hour commuting :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin:
In christchurch that would take ouy waaaay out into the country, past the next towns :icon_biggrin:

It takes me 15 minutes to commute, but thats on a bike, and i live in the suburbs.

BTW it is popular for people to buy a "lifestyle" block in the country and commute such distances, but they usually only last for 2 or 3 years. Eventually the commuting gets to people.

If you wanted to get fit, and hour commuting on a bike, would get you a nice place in the countryside. :icon_biggrin:

My current comute is 45-60 minutes, depending on what time I leave. It does get old. especialy in bad weather when than can double or more.

Thank God for my iPod! I listen to audio books and it makes the time go much quicker.

I'm looking forward to a much shorter comute!
