Default drivers licenses questions

Can anyone tell me how my California drivers license will need to be modified when I relocate to NZ? Is there a special license for motorcycle riders? How about helmet laws?

I think that international drivers licenses are only good for a certain amount of time. If I'm in NZ for an extended period (hope hope)I'll need a NZ license. Is the transistion difficult or just a paperwork shuffle?

Cheers,
Tom

I'm still yet to find out what I need to do, but I do know some things.....

You can drive on a US License for a year after your arrival in NZ. After that you need to get a NZ License.

They have restricted and such kind of like ours, but adults in their 30's often have restricted licenses (no driving at night, no passengers, etc). From what I've heard so far with a US License you can convert it into a full license. Can't guarantee that though.

I know I know nothing about Motorcycle licenses -"cAristotle" - Helmets are mandatory, same goes for bicycles.

Your CA liscense will simply transfer...Go to AA, look for the form for converting a foreign liscense (DL5, I think), show proof of identity and proof of residence, you'll sit a 35 question theory exam, and when you pass you will recieve a NZ liscense that is the equal in class to whatever you have in the USA...I converted a USA CDL Class A into a NZ class 5f heavy truck (B train) liscense with no trouble at all.

Is that a typo? Either way, I guess I'm OK, now being in my 40s. :icon_wink:
