Default Emigration Suitability Calculator

Hi Guys,
Blimey, it certainly is quiet these days :icon_frown:
I guess everyone's waiting for their ITAs to arrive.
All this waiting with no news is a bit frustrating and ......... :icon_rolleyes:

Anyway, I thought this might give you some fun :icon_lol:

I thought it might be interesting to try and list all the factors that might affect whether people emigrate successfully.
The obvious next step was a calculator, like those in magazines, where you score yourself, and see how you rate.

So, that's what I've created.
Unlike my other calculators, this one is not based on researched figures.
It may give you an idea, but shouldn't be taken too seriously :icon_razz:

So, if you want, give it a go, and let me know what you think.

To start things off, our score is: 9

You can get straight to it here:
http://www.angelfire.com/hi5/neuraln...alculator.html

Come on Taffy & Jodie - what do you score ? :icon_biggrin:

J, Milliemoo ?
Everyone else I've forgotten to mention again :icon_eek: icon_exclaim.gif

Have fun.
Cheers
Steve

Had a laugh doing this Steve, scored minus 3, but we are not materialistic, so money matters not to us, this calculator assumes money will make your move a success. feel too that it's down to personalities and conviction. I think I scored badly because I see my family once a week, they babysit occasionally, but these things won't bother us, you cope, you make friends, you adapt. That's it, it's down to how adaptable you are too.

The chart is good for a bit of fun, there are many factors that determine a successful move and even though I scored minus 3, i'm still going :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

Steve - welcome back - wondered where you were? Is the house sold yet?

Ours has been on the market for three weeks and I'm sick of keeping the blooming thing tidy!

Like the calculator - maybe you should include a question about a rugby daft family - it would certainly push our points up from 3!

Hi Lisa,
Did I forget to mention that NZIS are now using my calculator as a basic requirement, like health and character.
Less that '0' and you're rejected :icon_eek: icon_exclaim.gif
Only kidding :icon_biggrin:

I agree. How can you possibly measure something like this and say "no" or "yes". Everyone is different.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Maybe, just maybe, if nothing else, it's given you an idea of the things that 'might' be the difficult things when you emigrate.
Knowing in advance at least allows you to prepare for those difficulties.
May, just mabe, it's good for that.

Also, who picked the numbers in the calculator ?
Me !
How ?
I guessed :icon_eek: icon_exclaim.gif
Who the hell knows what the numbers should be ?
I did come across a rather expensive book containing research information on emigration statistics, but I'm not paying all that for something that's probably not going to give useful answers !

Anyway, -3 isn't that bad a score anyway.
You know that less money will make things more difficult.
You know that you'll miss your family.
You know the kids will drive you mad unless you can find a baby sitter :icon_biggrin:

You're right, attitude counts for a lot.
Good luck.

Hi Anderson_clan,
I won't bore you with all the details, but browsers - they all do things differently. Standards - what standards :icon_sad:
But, after 3 days of hunting, I finally found the cure :icon_cool:

Nope, house viewings are at an all time low these days.
Since the changes to the attitude to granting residency, we're kinda hoping we get the immigration stuff sorted before the house sells. So it's kinda good that things are slow. Our estate agent won't believe me on that, but ha ho.
You just wait for a few months - that clean house will loosen up a bit :icon_rolleyes:
I think we're within about 1 hour of being reasonably tidy these days.

Sport - now that gives me a really big problem.
Sssssshhhhh.....[size=7:7aa2a75d77]I hate rugby ![/size:7aa2a75d77]

That's a pretty reasonable score.

Milliemoo,
Show off ! :icon_biggrin:

As someone on another forum said: "So the best thing is to be gypsy Billy no mates with wads of money !".

So, is that you then :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin:

It would be interesting to keep a book on peoples scores, and to see how they get on.

Thanks all for your replies.
Cheers
Steve

hohoho

ney kids and a house that's doubled in value I'm afraid (famous last words!
icon_exclaim.gif )

The one thing I really wonder about is how many people will come and see us when we move. I know my family will come out whenever possible (my bro would love to move too but his OH doesn't) but what about friends???? It's a long way to come for a couple of weeks.

Milliemoo,
It is a long way, but free accomodation and a more costly flight, probably balance out. ?1000 for 2 people for 2 weeks - pretty average !
And hey, look at the country :icon_cool:

I scored a zero, for whatever that's worth. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Don't own a house, no kids, don't visit family often (and live 1000 miles away from them). On paper, I think I'd be a success. Starting to second guess things overall, though. The more I think about it, the more difficult migrating solo seems to be. Moot point at the moment, as I'm waiting to transition from "Selected"-dom into "Successful"-dom. Until then, I'm just going to relax on the couch with my dog.

Thanks for posting that, Steve. Definitely makes you think about what factors affect your ability to migrate successfully. Though you forgot to include whether you're bringing your pets with you or not. And if they're gassy (like my dog over here that just let one fly. Bleurgh! :smiley19:)

Hey Steve,

I scored -2! Hmmmm, not sure I'd agree with that score! Even tried cheating on some of the questions :icon_twisted: the second time and I still only scored a big fat zero! Doesn't look good, does it! Better book those plane tickets home..... :icon_wink: How on earth did you score 10 milliemoo?? ::):

No seriously - it's a good calculator if you fit all of [b:fd9dda9ea7]STEVE's [/b:fd9dda9ea7]criteria! :icon_lol: But us being early twenties, no kids, a bit of money from our flat sale, not seeing family much when we were in the UK with them living 100 miles away, hang on - that's exactly how you score high! Hmmm, maybe I didn't do it right...

Anyway, we're having a ball here still, and it's been 3 1/2 months now - can you believe it? It certainly doesn't feel like that long ago that we were selling our flat, booking flights etc, but then again I was driving round town today and it all felt really familiar and like I'd been here for ages. (Now that's a contradictory statement if ever I heard one!) Just enjoying the sun this weekend and hope it's going to last!

See you all here soon!

I'm too scared to try your calculator, Steve. I dont want any bad news!

Welshgirl got here Wednesday morning, so we've been busy nest building :) Cant believe i've nearly been here a month already! My, how time passes in paradise....

Selling houses, booking flights etc, soon becomes the easy part... You wait till you get here and want to fill your food cupboards.. Stood in the middle of a supermarket thinking 'What the hell do I buy?!' There pretty much is nothing in the way of food brands from the UK (not sure about US). You will see familiar things like the Kelloggs range, but thats about it! As a shopping tip though, Heinz here is rebranded as 'Watties' and Walls ice cream etc is rebranded as 'Streets'.

Anyway, wandering off topic here!!
