Default When & where are you going?

Just been chatting on another thread and it's got me thinking - when and where is everyone on here are heading out?

It'd be cool to meet up when everyone gets here - put a face to a name etc at last!

I'll start - we're in Welly - we've been here for 2 months. Yay! :icon_biggrin:

Now over to you.....

Good thread, Jodie.

I'm hopefully heading that way in September of '05. At this point I'm thinking either Wellington or Christchurch. Going to make a trip in March-April to spend a week in each city, get a feel for where I want to live, and do some interviews. Perhaps you can help serve as a guide to get a feel for living in Welly :icon_lol:

Of course, this all depends on NZIS and how much they like me.

Hi All

We are hopefully going to Christchurch, seems like there is some manufacturing going on down there for Andy to pick up a job.

Fingers crossed we will be there by the end of next year. Still havent broken the news to family and friends that we are going, cant face that yet, my mother will be like the one from get a new life this week!

We were selected on 1st Sept, now at the ITA stage, just waiting for our paperwork.

Hi everyone,

We will plan to move to the North Shore in Auckland. The reason we chose North Shore was because:

* Plenty of IT opportunities in Auckland. Frodo's on a good wage here, which we know he won't match in NZ, but it would be nice to think he could secure an $80k+ job/contract

* We live in city at the moment (on the outskirts) and I think to make the relocation as smooth as possible I think choosing a nice area where you can commute to the CBD will start us off OK. If we were to move out to move to the middle of nowhere, it would be too much of a culture shock.

* Neither of us drive, so we need to be close to alot of ammenities. Devonport/Birkenhead are only 10min from CBD by ferry. I've still to check local facilities in these areas, but so long as theer's a greengrocer, fishmonger, post office, a couple of nice cafe/bars etc we'll be fine.

* A lot of the North Shore seems to be made up of small/ish communities, which is what we're looking for, with the advantage of being close to the city.

* We want to be near beaches/sea.

* The weather! Yes I know it rains, but hey just think of the sunshine :icon_cool:

There are some downsides to moving to the North Shore. ITS EXPENSIVE! Our little stash of money isn't going to stretch as far for a 3/4 bed house as it would in the South, but I still think we'll have a much better 'lifesyle' than we do here in Edinburgh. I'm hoping that because of the IT opportunities open to Frodo, that everything will even out.

We don't plan to move till Spring 06, but we started the process now to take advantage of the low selection mark. We are planning a bit of a jolly in Nov 05 to check out some areas.

Would love to meet people when we arrive, but I haven't heard of anyone else on this board moving to Auckland.

Hi,

We are hoping to visit next Spring time to check out some areas, particularly Wellington and perhaps some suburbs of Auckland. We have to look carefully at schools also. Wished we were there, now that the Autumn is coming in here, dark nights and mornings soon become boring don't they?

Jodie,

You seem to really love the place you've chosen to live in, that's so good for you. Do you have children? And if so, how are the schools? Most of my questions would relate to children, what things are available to a teenage boy for example? Or should I say, A teenage boy who doesn't really want to move from his current school and friends, has said he'll move until he's old enough to come back and study in the UK! (He's 13) Also have a boy who's 6, but I'm sure he'll find his own entertain anywhere!

Thanks for any advice you can give x

Hi guys,

Yeah - if anyone is venturing towards Wellington then give us a shout. We'll be sure to meet up for a drink and tell you where the best bars are! :icon_lol:

As for the schools round here, we don't have children (not planning to for a few years yet.....) so unfortunately I wouldn't know about the schools, Heath. I've heard a few comments about Island Bay schools being good though, but couldn't give you a proper answer about this I'm afraid.

Anything else, give me a shout,

Jod

Okay, thanks for that Jodie,
Shall re-start the homework on schools and education.
And I'll leave the bar-advice down to you!

Cheers, Heather

Milliemoo, I'll have a beer waiting for you :icon_biggrin: We've finally decided that we can put our house on the market in February and after that it depends on how long it takes to sell before we leave. But hopefully we'll be able to head over in June or July to the North Shore also. My man's family lives there so it'll be nice to be close to them. Like you we know that it's going to be expensive but we'll be able to get better paying jobs there so it'll even out. I've already sent my CV to my brother in law who's a finance manager over there and he reckons I won't have any problem getting work. I'm a secretary/pa. Now just have to paint and paper and weed and, and, and. It's neverending this getting ready to sell business. :icon_wink:

Hi Everyone

Well there are 4 of us. Deb (me), Pete my other arf, and 3 yr old twin girls, Emma and Jessica. We are going to be heading to Sunny Hawkes Bay, hopefully next month. Our house is sold. we have 4 people in the chain and all the surveys have now been done, just waiting for the solicitor to advise of possible exchange dates. We won't go until we've exchanged so hope it don't take too long. Pete is a Psychiatric Nurse, and has accepted a job at the Hawkes Bay District Health Board, and the hospital is in Hastings. We have been selected from the EOI pool, have got our police checks and will be having our medicals Friday 08/10/04 :icon_eek: icon_exclaim.gif :icon_eek: icon_exclaim.gif no way I'm gonna lose that stone in a few days :022: :022:
Plan to spend about 2/3 weeks travelling round before we reach Napier/Hastings, then need to find rented accomodation/car etc before Pete starts work, and we settle down to our new life in NZ.

Good luck to everyone planning their new life..
