Default New Series of Get A New Life.........

Hi Ady

Just watched the show what did you think?

The Densons are living on the Kapiti (sp?)Coast near Wellington, it showed the family going through the worst summer on record, so not as flattering to NZ as it could of been, all the same, some stunning scenery, the schools look good, accomodation fantastic and friendly Kiwi's. It still made me want to cry because i'm not there yet!!!

I felt the mother/granny back in England was very manipulative and unfair on Mrs Denson, It's hard enough leaving family without emotional blackmail on top (she wouldn't speak to her daughter in NZ) I do realise it must be hard for family left behind but I found attitudes to them leaving amazing!!. The best thing we can do is involve our families in every stage and really get them used to the idea.
Looking forward to reading other peoples perceptions.
Lisa

Hi Lisa

Yeah, interesting. All I can say is I'm glad our situation isn't anywhere near as bad as that. Emotional blackmail is a dreadful thing to do to an adult, let alone young kids. But I don't know how much that programme would have helped the situation between them???
However, in a perverse sort of way, I'm glad they showed a tricky one, as all too often it seems to be shown as being very easy!
Its easy to get carried away and we've set a date of next July, so I've sold my business, house and we can leave without having anything to worry about in the UK. The next 10 months will be slow, but we wouldn't want to get pulled back to the UK.

Yeah I think we all wanted our families to watch it :icon_twisted:

We are staying till July, as I haven't sold anything as yet, but want to give us plenty of time to get everything sorted. The sale of the business will take a few months to sort out, and I want to get the best trading part of the year in (Now to Xmas) so we don't want to put ourselves under any unnecessary pressure!
Also, my wife is a teacher, so going in July allows us time to get settled and for her to do some supply work before (hopefully) starting a permanent contract in Jan 2006.
I suppose we are fairly lucky as our points total without a job offer is 105, and as a safety net we have applied for and got a 1 year working holiday visa (as we are under 31).
Roll on July 2005!

Nice one Adi, sounds like you have everything under control :icon_biggrin:

Hey Taffy, sorry you missed it, it's sure to be repeated soon, or perhaps one of the good peeps on the forum taped it and will forward it on to you?
sorry I didn't :icon_frown:

We loved the programme. It was so interesting to see parts of Wellington, it gave a nice feel to the place ... looked very windy though, Windy Wellington, is that true? Everything looked fantastic, school, housing, stunning views, beaches, parks, even the streets looked so clean and new, but I guess that's TV for you.
The 'mother' in UK was an arse and must have made Mrs Denson's move and start to a new life completely dulled by her childish manipulative behaviour. There's probably not that many mothers who shout Yippee! and get flags out when their children decide to move to the other side of the world, but a bit of support and understanding wouldn't go a miss. My mother's dreading me moving away, but as she said herself, 'with a heavy heart, I wish you all the luck in the world'. blub blub.
Anyway, Wellington looks cool, I could handle a big slice of that. Anyone here thinking of emigrating Wellington way?? My husband is in police force and their HQ are there, so it could be a possibility for us.

have a good day whatever ya doin' :icon_razz:

They were in Paraparaumu outside Wellington which we have been told by a friend of ours in NZ is to far out to commute to Wellington.

We are looking to move to Wellington as it seems to be a good balance between lifestyle and job opportunities.

Cheers,

Chris.

I too saw the programme what a bitch from hell the mother was!!! My mum is devastated we are going but has said on many occasions she wouldnt ever ever change our minds and hopes she can visit for 6mths of the year so sees it as a bonus. (guess im a lucky Girl) as my hubby lost both his parents last xmas.
Anyway on a lighter note the weather looked crap but New Zealand looked exactly how i imagined it to look which is BETTER THAN HERE. cant wait hols are now 5 weeks away today 1 blissful month touring round NZ with 4 nights in singapore chucked in. Also have an interview on 18th Oct for Waitamata (how exciting any info gratefully recieved) and am being harrassed by 10 emails for a job in the Lakes (can my life get much better?

Yes, Paraparaumu is a bit too far to commute into Welly (well, by NZ standards anyway, and once you've been here a while you'll be the same!) and as for the weather, yes it is windy. Sorry to say it but it is.

But when you get a nice sunny day here (which has been pretty often in the last week or so - roll on the summer!), then you really can't beat Wellington. And even though it is windy, it tends to be worse during the night so it doesn't affect you too much. The city is pretty sheltered from the wind by all the tall buildings, so it's not too windy there. The worst parts are obviously the exposed areas (don;t try walking along the coast by Red Rocks in a high wind - trust me!! :icon_eek: icon_exclaim.gif ), but apart from that, it's pretty manageable. And after all, there must be some down side to this beautiful city, eh!
