Default does experience count for anything?

Hi, i am in the UK at the moment and have been offered a job in the boatbuilding industry in NZ. I have experience but as yet, no relevant qualifications, will this prevent me from obtaining a work visa, secondly, am i allowed to gain qualifications whilst i am being employed over there?

Hi Paulie,
Experience does count and whether or not you can get a work permit depends on your employers actions. The job you have been offered must have been publicly advertised and also your employer must be able to prove that no suitable New Zealander was available for the work. If they do that, you can apply for a general work permit.

All the best

Thank you Taffey for the info, just another question though; can you gain qualifications in NZ whilst working on this visa?

Hi Paulie,
No, if you dont have residency, you cannot study unless it is for a maximum of 3 months and directly related to registration for your work.

Your only other option would be a student visa with a work entitlement, but this only allows you to work a few hours a week (up to 16 hours I believe).

No, that still counts as study. Although I would think you could probably get permission for a day release course as a condition on your permit. You would need to speak directly to immigration for that though.

As an ex. recruitment consultant - I can confirm if procedure is followed accordingly then you'll be fine getting the role in NZ. By process I mean what Taffy is saying about advertising the role, interviewing candidates etc.

The hirer needs to identify why you are more suitable then the local candidates. It happens all the time - not just in hiring either. In services where a service provider is identified as perfect but procedure require public notice of services required by a business. Tenders are accepted but geez fail to met match the requirements as well as their intended provider.

It's hard to prove that a person or business was privately selected before going out to tender.

Cheers,

Donna

Hi there
Is it true that you can come over on a holiday visa and, and change it to a work visa if you are offered a job, is this a long complicated procedure?

Hi Paulie,
Yes, you can change your WHV for a work permit once you are there and I dont see any reason why someone from Equador couldn't work in New Zealand, provided they had all the necessary documents.
