Some valuable information can get lost in forums, so if you are from the USA and have questions specific to USA to New Zealand migration, this is the place to ask!

Default Banking

Has anybody found an easy way to move money between the us and nz?It seems that the only banks operating in both countries are HSBC and Citibank. I would be hoping to move money easily between a nz and us account with the same bank.

Just as an aside the broker I have been using in nz has just gone belly up and is all over the news!

We opened our NZD account with the National Bank before we came out, but when we got here we also opened a sterling account with the National Bank and transferred a chunk of money (British Pounds) into that. We're now transferring a bit at a time into our NZD account (with no fees to pay each time cos it's internal transactions) and we'll probably do this until we get the money from the house sale transferred over when we get residency and look to buy a house.

We didn't want to transfer it all at once in case we didn't get residency for any reason and had to transfer it all back. It's worked well so far....

here is a reply from Dick smith Electronics to my questions about taking a refrigerator and vcr's and dvd's etc.

Hi Peter,

A fridge would not be practical due to the current consumption being so
high. Even if you could get a converter capable of doing this, it would
be very
expensive and general household wiring only supports up to 10Amps at
240V so
the converter would need to be very efficient to accommodate this.

US VCR's can work on US TV's, and most new TV's (ones that support
NTSC). However it
will only work for playback of US tapes, you will not be able to record
in NZ
or playback NZ tapes and as the cost of a mains converter is pretty
close to
the cost of a basic VCR it is probably not worthwhile either.

To convert the signal you would need a standards coverter and they are
generally
very expensive in comparison to VCR's

Taffy, hopefully it's cool to cut and paste from other forums. I will get that US related web page together at some point. Maybe I'll work on it while I'm at the coffee shop here.

Drummaj, I think its better to give a link to the article on the site and credit the poster of the information. Instead of posting the entire thing just a paragraph and people can click on the link to visit for the rest.

Good point, netchicken, but I don't know if it's acceptable etiquette to link to a different forum. Also, there is no telling how long the post will be available on that forum. Thus, my decision to mirror the info. If taffy clarifies his position on the Etiquitte, I will gladly edit the post to simply link to the information.

Hi J,
As you say, its better to copy the info that to paste a link as there is no telling how long an external link will last.

I think its more a question of 'Does the original poster mind their info being copied?'!

Keep up the good work :icon_biggrin:

That *is* a good question, Taffy. I spoke with the poster, and he'd rather not have the comments duplicated for several reasons. But obviously it's been posted to a public forum, and it really is a shame to not be able to share that information with other people who might benefit from it. Linking to it seems the only way to make it available, but when the link goes down, the information is lost. Quite the dilemma.

I'm of the opinion it's bad form to link to another forum, so I will refrain from doing that. But if anyone would like the info, I'll be happy to reply to a PM or email.
