Why "ginger"? And what do you call ginger, then?

I've no idea why it's called ginger....it's a West Coast thing really but people use the term across here as well (not very seriously though!). It used to refer to a Scottish fizzy drink called Irn Bru, which I doubt you get in the USA. It's only recently crossed the border to England! The colour of Irn Bru is orange so I guess that's why it could be called 'ginger' .
