Default POL - IT Catergories ??????

ooooohhhhhh ma heed hurts....

I've just been looking at the NZI site for about the zillionith time, and I've come across to different POLs ???? If you click on the link on the right hand side of the screen you get a very detailed list of IT job titles and the qualifications and experience need for them. If you're looking at the points indicator and click on the absolute skills shortage hyperlink, the info is less specific. Soooooooooo I have some questions (not like me, I know! ;) )
- Which of the two lists do they use? They are essentially the same list, but one requires a lot more and different qualifications/experience than the other.
- When they say 'Minimum of 5 years full-time work experience in Systems Development AND completion of a recognised programme of formal training in that area.' do they mean your Hons Degree ? It's just that they list that seperately.
- What level are they looking for under required IT skills ? Frodo has experience in Dreamweaver but he's really a Lotus Notes man.
- Looking at the the less detailed form, the position of 'Senior Design Engineer' doesn't state any required skills or level of skills. Frodo says he can call himself this, so is this an option do you think?

It could make a big difference. Using the bonus points for 'Future Growth Area' and 'Absolute Skills Shortage' we'd get 120 points! :)

I think I might give them a call and ask for some advice. Any thoughts in the mean time ?

Milliemoo ;)

Default POL - IT Catergories ??????

Hi,
Serves you right - you should have taken headache pills BEFORE entering that site :icon_biggrin:
It drives me crazy too.
Yep, I've found more than one of things before. Including the POL.
I often wonder whether putting a date on documents at the top might be an idea I could patent. After all no one seems to have thought of it !!!!!
Not in NZIS land anyway.

I suppect they don't use either. It's probably in the operations manual as well !!!!!
Is it Taffy ?
I'm too scared to go in there !

I'd like to know the answer to "recognised programme of formal training".
Although I don't think Physics with some computing/electronics is going to count anyway :icon_cry:

My title was above "Senior Design Engineer". But it all depends on the definition of those words.
As you say, ther's nothing in the right columns. So 'senior' isn't those listed below !? I appears not to be the NZIS definition of senior. Just the English word !?

I look forward to comments on this. And what you find out with NZIS.

Don't forget to use the cheap number.

Cheers

Steve

This one is a real headache. The 'recognised formal training' can be one of a few things.

1. Something like an Honours degree, which must be backed up by work experience.

2. External qualifications such as MCSE or CCNE, again, backed up by work experience.

3. A programme of training performed by a company you worked for, that has some relevance to the outside world, for example, if your company taught you how to programme in C++, followed by you working in the field, you have been 'formally trained'.

You need to check the definition of a 'senior design engineer'. Now, to me, if someone said they were one of those, I would imagine that they designed electrical or mechanical systems, possibly using computer aided design (CAD) or similar.

Hows that for an answer?!

Hi Taffy,
I went on a 7 week "Senior Software Engineering" course held at Cranfield.
It was 7 days a week, 18 hours a day !
And I'm NOT joking - it was VERY intensive.
And I got a certificate !
I actually think I learnt more in 7 weeks than in 3 years at college !
As a result I became a project leader on a software project.

Does that count ?

I've been a project leader a number of times, responsible for project planning, budgets, design etc.

I guess that covers 'senior', by NZIS definition.

I must have another look at the OSL & POL.

Cheers

Steve (still waiting for the selection point figures !)

One point that people often miss, is that the occupational shortages list only has a 'Recommended' level of qualification. Now, to me, that suggests that its preferable for you to have those qualifications, but not essential. No where in anything I've read has it mentioned these levels are compulsory, only recommended.

What do you think, Steve? Justified thinking?

Hi Guys,

Thanks again for you input

I've just discovered the joy of the NZI Operations Manual....give me War & Peace any day!

The POL is in Appendix 6: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra...rationsmanual/
Click on 'Appendices' and go to page 93.

Now, as far as I can make out from all the info I've been looking at today, Frodo who is a Senior Software Developer/Programmer and has an Hons Degree with 10 yrs exp including Dreamweaver (allbeit not his specialist skill) is able to claim bonus points for 'Future Growth Area' AND 'Absolute Skills Shortage'.

I'm going to give them a call next week, just to make sure. Fingers crossed, cause if I'm right we'll be sampling the delights of the EOI form sooner than expected.

Now, where did I put those birth certificates.

Milliemoo

Milliemoo,
Which appendices ?
The 767kb one at xyz or the 286kb one at xyz ?
A little error on the page me thinks

Thanks for the location - saves me searching for it.
I've written up the contents list of the operations manual on my NZIS links page.
I'll try and describe the contents of each - time willing.

Taffy,
You're just trying to give me work aren't you
I've got so much to do, to get the house ready for sale etc etc
Now I've got to see if I am on the OSL/POL when I'd ruled myself out

You might be right. That's the trouble, they do seem to have expressions that they can 'interpret'. Maybe to give themselves flexibility.

Cheers guys,

Steve

OK, I've listed the useful stuff in the operations manual with page numbers

http://See http://www.angelfire.com/...nzislinks.html

I'm not on the OSL because it requires 12 months in the last 18 months in one of the "specialisations on the IT skills list"

Also, although I'm an electronics engineer (I design VLSI chips), "Electronic Engineer" requires "Bachelor of Engineering: Electronic and Electronics".
I've ONLY got a degree in Physics
I guess the fact that I've designed numberous chips doesn't count !
Including as project leader/designer !

Just read a report which says experience counts far more than qualifications !
Maybe NZIS should have read it !?

On the POL, I don't get the bonus points, because I don't have a "Bachelor of Computer Science" (column 4).

Now the "POL requirements" in column 3 talks about "Qualifications must be comparable to the standard of the New Zealand qualification listed"
But, for IT professionals, it doesn't mention qualifications.
We get back to that phrase "Minimum of 5 years full-time work experience in a relevant area of expertise AND completion of a recognised
programme of formal training in that area."
The critical bit being "completion of a recognised programme of formal training in that area".
Recognised by whom ?

So, I'm still not sure whether I'm on the POL or not

Since there seem to be a lot of IT people on here we need to try and sort this out.

Taffy ?

Cheers

Steve

Mornin Steve!

I'll let you know what I find out next week. I'll also ask them some more general questions on how qualifications etc which are needed are interpreted.

Good luck !
