Default POL - IT Catergories ??????

Hi,

That's a shame....at least you're over there though!

We're not planning the big move until spring 06, but will be out on a wee visit in Nov 05. We were'nt planning on completing the EOI so soon, but we thought we'd take advantage of the low pass mark.

There's probs with the online form at the moment and it doesn't look like it'll be fixed till after Sunday....boo hiss. It's taken me so long to work out what we can and can't claim for, that I just want to get that form in ASAP!

Default POL - IT Catergories ??????

I remember seeing As400 (iSeries , i5 .whatever) on one of the shortages list months and months ago but I haven't seen it lately..

Do any of you IT'ers actually in NZ know what the As400 market is like just now. I am registered with the SEEK website and am getting email alerts on average once a week for As400 work..

I am not IBM certified at the moment.. As my wife is going to be our primary applicant as a midwife.. I'm not sure that I'll need the certification for points but is more emphasis made on these IBm MS CISCO type certifications in NZ as here in the UK.. I;ve been in IT for seven years now here in the UK and I only know about 3 people that have IBM certification and they don;t know there arse from their elbow to be quite frank...

thanks in advance..

I think you should qualify without any problems.
Taffy, please do. I thought I was looking at the OSL Appendix to the operations manual, but is that not what you're discussing? I don't see anything that applies to me.

As far as I can tell, I qualify for these points:

Skilled Employment: 0 (no offer, no experience in NZ)

Qualifications:
Basic Qualification: 50 pts (bachelors in computer science)
Future Growth Area/cluster/skills shortage: 5 pts (IT/software - this is the one I'm unsure of?)

Work Experience: 15 pts (5 years)
Can't get any bonus points as not in NZ (at least that's what the EOI form leads me to believe)
It is in a comparable labor market

Age: 30 pts (25 years old)

So...can I claim those 5 points? Is that what everyone here is saying? Or am I missing something?

Sorry to have to ask. I must be dense. I can't find anything that makes me certain of this.

J,
You're not thick - it's blooming confusing !

Have you looked at my NZIS links page ?

I've described the various sections, with page numbers.

http://www.angelfire.com/hi5/neuraln...nzislinks.html

Scroll down to 'Operations Manual'.

It says:

Appendix 6 page 93 for POL

and

SM16 page 318 for Bonus points (qualifications in an identified...)

Hope that helps.

I'm sure Milliemoo can explain her thinking best.

Steve (rooting for you for those extra 5 points)

Hi,
I'll say what I read in English:

From POL:

For bonus points without a job offer you need the qualifications noted in the 4th column.

For "IT Professionals" you need "Bachelor of Computer Science"

Now we look at the ** descriptions:

Do you fit on one of those lines ?

The obvious 'vague' line is "Senior Design Engineer", with no other requirements.

From SM16:

SM16.15 - Qualifications in an area of absolute skill shortage

Need to be in column 4 of POL

If yes to all those you get 5 points !

So, the big question is are you on the POL ** list ???

Cheers

Steve

Okay, so here goes.

Based on this:

Quote:
SM16.20 Qualifications in an area of absolute skills shortage

a. If a principal applicant does not have skilled employment in New Zealand in an area of absolute skills shortage (see SM8.20), their recognised qualification will be assessed as being in an area of absolute skills shortage if it is listed as a qualification (or is assessed as comparable to a qualification) in Column 4 of the POL (see Appendix 6).

(page 321)
and looking at appendix six, a B.S. in computer science is listed in column 4. So, I think I can get those points. Oohh, I'm gonna fill out an EOI tonight. Joy.

Based on some of the other quoted things here, it seems I may even be able to claim bonus points for work experience, even though the work wasn't in NZ. Is that what y'all were debating? I understand now. This is way too complicated.

But I'm happy that at least I *believe* I can fill out an EOI. I need to read over the guide to make sure I"m interpreting this right (I've found the printed EOI form and accompanying guide to be helpful).

Now if I can just get a raise at work, thinks will be rockin.

Thanks for the help, Steve. I hadn't seen that page of links, but I saw your master links page. There's just too much to process.

I don't fit on one of those lines. But, the way I read it, that's not important. It doesn't mention that you have to fit that title, description. Just that the qualification needs to appear in that column, no?

Bubble slowly deflating....I have no proper management experience (though have informally managed and mentored interns and new hires).

I know what you mean.
It's like catching flies while speeding along a road surrounded by mad drivers.
OVERLOAD !

And don't you just hate websites with masses of stuff all over them so you can't find anything.....

Good luck with that form.

Steve, you've lost it I think. Seek help? Please? :icon_mrgreen:

So, do you read it differently than I do? Do you think I need to fall into one of the descriptions in the other columns of the POL, or just have my qualification show up in column 4? Taffy, where are you? Someone tell me so I can just ditch work and go do the EOI (not that i"m working now - I'm too busy posting trying to get this straight).

Hi,

"Systems Development Staff" and "Senior Design Engineer" doesn't mention management.

My problem is I don't have any of the other things, like embedded C.
But I have managed !
But I don't have CS degree - so irrelevant.

from nz1093.pdf:

Systems Development
Staff as per attached
specification***

Experienced Practitioner/Supervisor
? Works to agreed objectives. Has full responsibility for quality of work performed, either as a manager or as a technical
specialist.
? Uses experience to make informed decisions on selection and execution of all technical approaches across a wide field,
either in a management or advisory capacity.
? Performs work which requires the application of a significant range of fundamental principles in a wide and often
unpredictable variety of contexts.
? Demonstrates leadership skills on a regular basis. Demonstrates effective communication both orally and in writing,
with subordinates, colleagues, clients and customers at all levels, both formally and informally.
? Demonstrates a good understanding of the relationship of own specialisation or area of responsibility to the employing
organisation as a whole and takes customer requirements fully into account when making proposals and/or carrying
out work.
? Takes initiative to ensure technical skills and specialisations are kept up to date in link with the industry developments.

I'm afraid it's a bit vague.
I think Taffy thinks "Senior Design Engineer" would be OK, because they don't care too much, as these are examples !
I think someone said that.

I'd fill in the form anyway.
At least you gain the knowledge of doing it and it's there ready.
You don't have to pay.

Cheers

Steve
