Default POL - IT Catergories ??????

Ummmmm,

Bonus points for work experience.
3 categories:

1) Identified future growth area - need a job/job offer to get points

2) Identified cluster - need a job/job offer to get points

3) Area of absolute skills shortage - It appears that you CAN get points if you meet the POL requirements.

It says:

Quote:
SM13.20 Work experience in an area of absolute skills shortage
a. Recognised work experience is assessed as being in an area of
absolute skills shortage if:
i it was undertaken in an occupation included on the POL (refer
Appendix 6); and
ii it meets the specifications for that occupation; and
iii the principal applicant* is suitably qualified by training and/or
experience to undertake that work (including any specific
requirements set out on the POL).
b. Where the POL specifies that occupational registration is required for
a listed occupation, principal applicants must demonstrate that they
held occupational registration while undertaking the work experience,
if occupational registration is required in the country in which the
work occurred.
Now I've got to re-read what you said.

Cheers

Steve

Right, you said:

Quote:
If your going down the IT route and want to claim bonus points for 'absolute skills shortage' you will need a degree in Computer Science and a min 5 yrs work experince in IT relating to your degree.

* NOTE * the above is only relavent if your are trying to claim points for being on the POL. If you've checked the requirements on the POL and looked at the information above, and realised you can't claim the bonus points, you can still apply under the Skilled Migrent catergory.
No computer science degree for me - so no bonus points for me

But what about Frodo ? 6 years or more = 10.

Hi Steve,

As far as I see it, we can claim for the following:
Degree = 50
Qualification in absolute skills shortage = 5
8+ years work relevant work experience = 25
Bonus for 6+ yrs work experience in absolute skills shortage = 10
Age = 25 (another reason to be quick off the mark!)
Total = 115

Have you tried accessing the online EOI lately... I keep getting an error page.

Right, must do some work

Hi, Yes work - need to do some myself !

Yes, operations manual says:

Quote:
SM16.20 Qualifications in an area of absolute skills shortage
a. If a principal applicant does not have skilled employment in New
Zealand in an area of absolute skills shortage (see SM8.20), their
recognised qualification will be assessed as being in an area of
absolute skills shortage if it is listed as a qualification (or is assessed
as comparable to a qualification) in Column 4 of the POL (see
Appendix 6).
b. If a principal applicant does have skilled employment in New
Zealand in an area of absolute skills shortage (see SM8.20) their
recognised qualification will be assessed as being in an area of
absolute skills shortage if the specialist, technical or managerial
expertise required for that employment was obtained through the
completion of that qualification.
c. Recognised qualifications in an area of absolute skills shortage only
qualify for points if any occupational registration requirements
relating to those qualifications are met (see SM19.15).
So it appears you can claim the extra 15 points.

I should have done a computer science degree :icon_sad:

I expect the EOI submission process is having rather a lot of access at the moment !

Cheers

Steve

Wait. I need to look at that POL list again, I guess. I thought, as a software developer, I didn't qualify. I do have a CS degree, and equivilent of 5 years full-time experience. ooh, this could push me over 100 pts. Or am I missing something here?

Damn the NZIS for making things so hard for us non-kiwis to understand!!

Hi J,
By my rekoning, on the OSL under 'IT Specialists', if you look on the list of recognised skills appendix that goes with the OSL, you will see there are many software languages that you can qualify under!

If you have problems finding the appendix, let me know and I'll guide you in!

I think you should qualify without any problems.

Now I'm really confused! Doesn't it state somewhere that work experience only counts AFTER you've completed your degree? IE no work done during your time at uni counts? Especially not work experience I think I read somewhere....

I think the new NZIS website is just too confusing!!! :021:

Hi Jodie, how are you?

Yes I agree....I'm sure I read that somewhere too. Whenever I refer to work experience, I mean work which is relevant to the degree after you've graduated.

If you could include uni placements etc, I think Frodo would class as 10 yrs+, but we're going to play it safe and claim for 8 yrs +.

Hi Milliemoo,

I'm good thanks. How's things going your end? How long now til you come over here?

Thanks for clearing that up for me - we've only just got 2 years experience so borderline! (If we could include stuff while at uni it'd be more, but looks like it's just 2 years then!)
