Default Hello!

Hi,

I came across this site a couple of weeks ago, and you may have seen a couple of my posts already. Apologies for not introducing myself sooner....

We (Cath 28 & Duncan 33) plan to move to NZ in Spring 2006. I have lived and worked in NZ before (many moons ago on a working hol visa) but Duncan has never been. The strange thing is, it was Duncan who suggested checking NZ out and hopefuly move there. Of course I've always had it in the back of my mind that I'd like to setlle in NZ, so was thrilled when he suggested it.

We have a trip planned in Nov 2005, so will be checking out places, job opportunities etc with the hope of moving in the following Spring. Duncan will be the one applying for residencey. He's a Senior Software Developer (10+ yrs exp) . I thought it would be quite simple to apply for res, but his IT skills are not on the list. He's a Lotus Notes man. I see alot of people go out on a holiday with the intention of getting a job. How does this work ??? You're not allowed to work whilst on hols so how can you apply for jobs when they all state "must be elligable to work in NZ"??? Is it just because they're more willing to wait for you to apply for your work visa because you're already in the country? Can you start to work when you apply for the visa, or do you have to wait till it all comes through? How long does this take? If you don't get a job after 3 months (eek) is it possible to come home and then enter the country again for another 3 months on 'holiday'.

Apologies for all the questions. Hope someone can help.

Thanks for the great site/forum

Cath AKA Milliemoo

Default Hello!

Hi Cath,
Don't believe the "You need a work permit" statements.
It's true but misleading.
Once you get a job offer you can apply for a work permit.
That can take days, but could take maybe weeks (or more !).
The statement is to deter those not in NZ, and because it's not so easy and quick for the agencies.
They'd prefer to get their money quickly.
You need the work permit FIRST, before you work. No doubt on that one.

Don't forget that if you get a visitors visa (rather than just visiting) you may be able to stay for a lot longer.
You need to check for your country. I don't know where you are.
If you check the NZIS site on holidays you'll see that it's 9 months in every 18 months.
But it's a bit more complicated than that.
Have a look at my website. You might find some useful answers.
My wife and I & kids are hoping to emigrate within the year.
My website just lists everything I've learnt about it.
Then please come back and ask away !
It's Taffy's site, and he's very knowledgeable (OK Taffy !)

I hope that helps.

Steve

Default Hello!

Hi Steve,

Great site!

Thanks for the info. The more I think about it, the more I want to try and secure something before going out. We will have 2 weeks at the end of Nov next year. Do you think it's likely that if a job offer was made, that the employers would wait 3 months for you to start ??? hummmmmm may have to plan another wee trip in Feb/March 06.

Thanks again :icon_wink:

Default Hello!

Hi,
Thanks.
Please note the change of address (see my signature)
I tried using a free domain name, but it creates pop-ups and has other painfull features.
So the full address is a better one to use.

I wish I knew the answer to your question.
I guess it just depends.
If they can't get someone, and your husband is the answer to their problem, then they will wait, given no option.
There is a rather unliked solution.
He goes out quite quickly, and you get to do EVERYTHING on your own, and follow later :icon_eek: icon_exclaim.gif
Yep, I know I don't want to do that either !

No one said it was easy :icon_frown:

All the best

Steve (I hope these new icons of Taffy's work !)

Default Hello!

Hi,

::):

Believe it or not....the idea of packing Duncan off ahead of me is quite appealing. I'm one of these really irritating super organised people, and can't wait to get everyting packed and sorted.

Obviously the ideal is to get a job offer before we go (whether that takes two trips or one) and if need be Duncan AKA Frodo can scoot off 3 or weeks ahead and get a rental sorted out. :026:

Default Hello!

When you say Lotus Notes is not on the list to you mean the Priority Occupation List - the 10 years experience is still in ICT and is valid for points with the Skilled Migrant Category

Default Hello!

Hi Dave,

Yes, was having a wee bit of a panic due to information overload. Although we could get extra points for his skills being on the POL it's still a skilled proffession, so know probs. That said, either way, we still need a job offer to boost the points up.......unless of course the EOI drops again!

Thanks

Default Hello!

Milliemoo,

You have had exactly the same confusion as we did - POL, Occ shortage, future growth area etc etc. Being in one of these narrower bands of skills just gives you EXTRA points.

The number of points required is coming down and may eventually meet the 100 mark. NZIS took about 1000 EOIs last time from the pool. Have a look at the doc that give the details for the Latest Skilled Migrant EOI Selection Point at

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/

left hand side under HOT LINKS. This gives a really good impression of how the numbers work.

Dave
