Default used cars in auckland

Hi,
My husband and I are arriving in Auckland on the 18th Dec. We have a two week holiday before we settle down in Hawke's Bay (Waipukaru, anyone know it?). We have a hire car booked but it is expensive. Would we be able to buy something easily in auckland as obviously we don't know the area?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Try this when you get to auckland:

As long as you have a rough idea about cars it's got loads for sale. Ellerslie not far south from centre of auckland.

That's where I got mine from a couple of years ago.

Hi!

We bought a car after a week of being here from K Wardle Cars in Takapuna (North Shore), Auckland. We dealt with Kevin as he was a friend of Darren's cousin, and he's got 2 warehouses full of cars so it's quite an extensive selection - you're bound to find something suitable.

We paid $6500 for our 1996 Mazda with 6 months WOF (MOT) and 6 months reg included.

If you're interested, I can let you have his number. He was a really helpful chap and even picked us up from the town centre in Takapuna and took us to his yard and back again.

Thanks that's a great help. We will cancel our hire car and buy when we get there.

Default Manakau City

Hey Clairebear,

This topic caught my eye as I bought a (very) used car from a place in Manakau City. We caught the bus out there and came back with a 1980! Honda Accord that lasted the journey around both of NZs beautiful Islands. I would also recommend that you get an AA dude to come and look over your car - it only costs about $100 and they will tell you if there is owt wrong with it. Definately a better option that hiring a motor. Have fun.

If you haven't already visited autopoint.co.nz - you'll spend many hours shopping for almost anything you want. I find it a good guide as to the general cost of new and secondhand purchase in NZ. Mike

Hi,
I recommend these for checking what you're buying:

LemonCheck - New Zealand Car Check, Vehicle Information & Auto History Lemon Checks
http://www.lemoncheck.co.nz/

Red Book ? Car Price Guide
http://www.redbook.co.nz/

U-Save Automotive (use Vehicle check section)
http://www.usaveauto.co.uk/

And I guess this for knowing what the law says:

Land Transport Safety Authority - about using cars in NZ (like driving licenses)
See ?Visitors & new residents?

Cheers

Steve
