Default Registering for income tax

:?: I hold a N.Z.passport. My husband has applied for residency under the partnership catorgie.I wondered if I could apply for a national insurance number(or the equivalant)ahead of arriving in N.Z.so that I could start working straight away.My brother recalls that N.Z. has a completly different system.

You need to contact the IRD for a IRD tax number that all of us have.

Thats what an employer will require so they can pay you.

Is this what you mean?

Many thanks Orewa for that information.Yes I think we are talking about the same thing. Do I have to apply for a number before I comence employment or do I start in a job and the employer sorts it all out. Do you think I could get one before leaving U.K.even though I wont have a particular job to go to.Sorry to sound complicated, but if you dont ask!!!

Don't worry too much - I got mine the day after I arrived from the UK by visiting the IRD office - they are very helpful here!

If you look at the IRD website they say

"Complete this form to get an individual IRD number.

Send in a photocopy of one of the following documents as evidence of identity:

Birth certificate
Current New Zealand passport
Current New Zealand 18+ card
Current overseas passport
Certificate of New Zealand citizenship
Current New Zealand photo ID driver licence
A Certificate of Identity issued by the New Zealand Immigration Service"

So you should be able to get one in advance, although as I said they are so efficient here it may not be worth the effort - unless you are going to be earning money here before you arrive!

for more info

Hope this helps
