Default Whats our best option?

Help.. whats the best way in for us??? My partner is a Production Engineer, with a diploma in his field and more then 10 years experience. I have a BTEC in Business & Finance and a jack of all trades but master of none. We managed to get a 110 points on the self assessment form, but I think it would shoot right up to 170/180 if he managed to get a job (outside of Auckland)! We are visitng the North Island in December and wondered if he might be better looking for a job then or keep looking on the net now? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Tip: NZ cities and offices, plants and recruiters close down from late december through the 3rd or 4th week in January. I am not joking.

The country goes on summer holiday. Even the weekday morning national news show goes off the air for 4 weeks. Better to come in February.

Its a strange employment market as the country is so small that if you are too experienced you may not easily get a job. As well if you specialize in a field the work may not be here. So you have to hit the mark. Even Kiwis who have been overseas for years comeback to " you don't have enough NZ experience". If you are over 40 that too can be a drawback.

But if you are from the UK you are far better off. Good luck.

Thanks for that, we are visiting from the beginning of December so hopefully we will get in before summer holidays... fingers crossed anyway.

In the meantime we will keep searching the net and emailing agencies from here in sunny Dorset.

Thanks Again

Louise

Louise,
You won't get very far with agencies while you're not in NZ
They want their money NOW.

Please, please, please don't just rely on agencies :!:

There are other ways.
Refer to this if you don't believe me:

WorkSite (gov gateway) - Finding a job guide (CVs & interviews etc)
http://www.workandincome.govt.nz/pdf..._find_work.pdf

My tip would be the following.
Visit my NZ links page:
http://www.angelfire.com/hi5/neuraln...landlinks.html
Click on all of the following:

'Directories'
Search for companies that might employ your other half. They may not have vacancies advertised, or even have any now, but may still employ him, or keep his CV on file.

'Career Guides'
Make sure he's got an NZ style CV.

'Jobs'
For those agencies, but also papers and other direct routes.

'Libraries'
Even these may help

If he gets a job this way, my commission is...... :D  :)

I hope that helps.

Steve (currently running a 'there are other ways than agencies to find a job' campaign !)
