NEW YORK - Australia and New Zealand shared first place in a first-of-its kind survey ranking 153 nations on the willingness of their citizens to donate time and money to charity.

China ranked near the bottom, barely higher than last-place Madagascar.

The report, released overnight by the British-based Charities Aid Foundation, showed striking variations in charitable behaviour around the world.

For example, it found that only 4 per cent of Lithuanians gave money to charity, compared with 83 per cent of people in Malta; 61 per cent of people in Turkmenistan did volunteer work, compared with 2 per cent of Cambodians.

The overall rankings were a composite of three categories - the percentage of people who donated money, donated time and helped a stranger in the month prior to being surveyed.

Hi all

I have been given a job offer by a company based in Wellington (I am in the UK). ME my wife and children are applying for work and student visas using an immigration service.

We have completed the medicals but I am concerned that the panel doctor has flagged up my Platelet count as being low and is putting together a letter to my doctor to investigate it further, I also have a higher BMI than required (37).

The platelet count is 127 (150 - 400 being the tolerance range). Having investigated this I do not and have never suffered from any symptoms of low platelet count (easy bruising, nose bleeds, bleeding gums etc). Im pretty sure that I don't have any of the problems which can manifest a low platelet count. in fact the only thing I can attribute it to is maybe a viral infection which I started to suffer from a couple of days after the blood tests where performed.

I'm really concerned that our requests for visa's will be denied based on my medical results. MY wife has handed her notice in at work and our house is up for sale. I don't want to have to perform a lot of running around for weeks dealing with immigration and submitting further test results as I've heard that once a medical assessor gets involved things can take weeks or months to complete. I cant expect my new employer to wait for too long before they are forced to revoke the job offer.

This is turning into a very stressful time and any help or information on how the work visa process works or how strict they are would be greatly appreciated.

kind regards
Ash

North Is quakes unrelated to Canterbury
The Dominion Post
Last updated 05:00 08/09/2010

Earthquakes that shook the North Island yesterday are not related to the 7.1 quake in Christchurch, seismologists say.

The largest tremor, at 10.48am, measured 5.2 and was centred off the Hawke's Bay coast, 90 kilometres south of Hastings. It followed a 3.6 quake at 10.03am, centred 40km south of Hastings.

Two small quakes struck Wellington later in the day. A magnitude 4.0 at 3.48pm was centred 20km west of the capital, followed by a 3.8 quake 20km southwest of the city at 4.18pm. Another 4.2 quake struck Porangahau in central Hawke's Bay at 6.36pm.

Quake monitoring network GeoNet said the Hawke's Bay quakes were not related to the Christchurch earthquake other than that they were both caused by the same two tectonic plates rubbing against each other.

"It would be a drawing a long bow to say that they are connected," data centre manager Kevin Fenaughty said.

GNS Science seismologist Brian Ferris said the Wellington earthquakes could not have been triggered by the Canterbury quakes. "It's just too far."

Porangahau residents reported that although items fell from shelves and pictures fell off walls, there was no real damage.

Bob Fair, the owner of Porangahau Garage, said the car he was working on leaped forward about a metre.

"It was a bit frightening. I thought it had jumped into gear."

The earthquake struck when pupils at Porangahau School were in the playground.

"The children hit the ground. They did all the things they were supposed to," executive officer Selina Cook said.

Hi. I have applied for a work visa extension 2 months ago and provided a police certificate with that. I`ve been told by the INZ that it will be valid for 6 months so I don`t need to provide another one if I apply for PR within 6 months. Now I want to apply for PR and they`ve told me that I need to provide a new Police Certificate. How is that possible??? I`ve been given conflicting information from INZ. If I knew I could have requested for 2 police certifcates in May when I was in my country. Now I already sent the one I had to them and it would take me about 3 months to get one if I`m overseas. That will delay my application. Anyone knows what I should do?Thank you all very much

Hello Guys,

at last after the long wait we finally received our ITA. I just have some queries regarding the passport length of validity. We are planning to submit our ITA by monthend and passport will expire next year April which is 7 months from the date of ITA submission, would that be okay? Another thing is that my wife have not changed her name to carry my family name yet, do we need to change it before we submit our ITA?

Thanks in advance for the replies.
