    Default advice needed!

    hello everyone,

I've been in NZ since March 27th this year and am really keen to gain residency.

I submitted my EOI a while back claiming 120 points for skills shortage and relevant qualifications. Sadly, I have heard back from the Wellington office saying that I only qualify for 100 points.

Despite contesting this it seems that although I have heaps of experience (5 years in ICT consultancy) because my degree isn't in IT (its in Business Admin)!

My IEP work visa expires on 26th March next year. I have two questions:

    1. Am I likely to get my residency through by then on 100 points
    2. If this is not likely, can i apply for a permit or something so i can continue here until it is approved.

I'd really be grateful for any advice.

    Thanks,

    Jon

Sounds as though you need to get yourself a job offer, which I believe is 50 points? AND will also mean that your application gets higher priority.

    Hi Jon and welcome.

You can still move forward with only 100 points but it will probably be very slowly. Those with the most points are selected first and then those with a decreasing number of points.

What kind of visa are you on at the moment that you've been able to stay in NZ since March?

As Lou says, a job offer would help push you along with regard to residency, but if you need a quick visa to stay in NZ while you work, you can apply for a Work Permit and you can continue with your residency application meanwhile.

There have been rumours that the new government are going to bring a new ruling that people's work experience is brought more to the forefront instead of purely relying on qualifications. How long this might take to come in, I wouldn't like to say.

Default Thanks Lou and Mother Bear

    Thank you for your replies!

I'm currently on an IEP work exchange visa and that expires on 27th March. I understand from speaking to immigration yesterday that this cannot be renewed.

I've been looking at the immigration site and it leads me to beleive that I can only apply for a permit if I meet one of the following:

    1. I have a job offer from a New Zealand employer (as Lou mentioned this would help anyway)
    2. specific purpose or event
    3. I am in a highly specialised field of work
    4. Student or training

    ... amoung others!

However, i'm not sure if I fit these ... Is it possible to get a permit if one is just temping with various agencies?

    Thanks,

    Jon

No, afraid not. Any offer of employment needs to be on a more permanent basis for at least a couple of year.

If you're already in NZ you are in a good position to look for a 'proper' job offer.
