Qualification Not Recognised (Joiner) - help with NZQA

Hi everyone,

After being selected from the pool, we have received an email from NZIS saying that Mike's Joinery apprenticeship and qualifications aren't recognised (they are not City & Guilds but Scotvec, a Scottish equivelant).

We now have to apply to NZQA for a preliminary assessment. We are now a bit worried that they might not assess us at the much needed level 4 which in turn affects our points for PR :icon_cry:

Does anyone else have any experience of this?

We also wondered if another route might be to try for a work permit and apply for PR once we are over there.

How many points are you on assuming qual is level 4?

We were at 130 points and I think Mikes trade accounted for 60 points if I remember correctly.

Meaning you wouldn't get in with the new rules without a job offer anyway. 70 points plus 50 for Job Offer, gives you 120 and a selection chance anyway. Need a minimum 140 without a job offer these days, at least that's the way I interpret the new rules.

Not sure if that's good or bad for you, what do other think? :icon_confused:

i still reckon if you've got over 100 and a job offer nothing much has changed..

In this case with the old SCOTVEC certificates, I would be of the mind that NZQA would say they are good enough..

Nothing has changed from the point of view of going to NZ and finding a job, sorting out a work permit and never coming back, at least I think not, so there's always that avenue to check out..

That's a vallid point actually. The old WTR avenue is still wide open and nobody's changed any rules to working permits.

Sort of. It was always Claire's choice to go to CC so as she was giving up more (emotionally anyway) to make the move, I figured it was best to go with her shout, however I was always keen on just north of Welly so I can work there, and escape the winds by retreating home to the area north of there.

However, Claire's re-evaluating and wondering whether Wellington's 'hipness' might be more agreeable. Looks like there's more cultural arty farty stuff/scenes there as oppose to CC which is more traditional. Claire's an (or should be) artist so it's possibly up her street.

Also CC house prices have gone so barmy it seems cheaper around welly (excluding the city itself and Upper Hutt). We're still gonna drive down to CC tho via Welly and make a final decision upon arrival in CC for a week or so. Sorry for essay, you did ask.
