MB, stop mentioning scary words like 'Christmas' on here - anyone would think there were only 59 days to go before...... oh wait, there ARE 59 days to go

No worries for me because they don't really celebrate Christmas here. Lets me off the hook.

Edited to add: Oh hell ! Just remembered, I'd better get busy writing out my Christmas cards. Every year we're late because it's so un-Christmassy here we always forget that, somewhere out there, eagerly awaited cards are starting to plop into letterboxes all over the place. Can't even bank on chilly temperatures to remind me it's getting near to December.

So you are starting to get the feel of a Kiwi Christmas then ;-)

beaches, barbecue, cricket, pavlova and cheesecake... and (ahem) rain, because the weather here is changeable!

Not really. Being a Muslim country, Christmas isn't celebrated here although the government has recently recognised that we do like to have a day off on Christmas Day so there is now the option to take the day off or work and take it off in lieu. It's just weird to see kids going to school, shops and businesses trading as normal and no Christmas decorations other than in a few expats' homes. Weather is generally great though, but definitely not Christmassy (as in the northern hemisphere). We quite like Christmas here because we're away from all the hype and hard work to pull it off successfully .

Yeah, my brother lives in Japan, so has to work on Christmas Day. For us Christmas was always more about food and family so he really misses that. IN Japan they have unfortunately taken on the commercial aspects of it only: the big department stores market it but most people, thankfully have not fallen for the ads.
