Default Dan Brown - over here and over priced

The new Dan Brown book 'The Lost Symbol' is up for sale at $39.99 or more in most Kiwi book shops, yet my mum says it's only a tenner (about $22 as things stand) in Tesco.

Why do books cost so much in NZ?

Has anyone bought it? Read it? Want to flick it on?

Maybe they are expensive because they're imported, like a lot of stuff? We found books very expensive in NZ, too. Have you looked on Amazon to see how much it is on there?

Yeah, the distance would account for some of the extra price, but I think it's the usual Kiwi story of limited supply and heavy demand = high prices. I did have a look at Amazon, but Tescos are way cheaper. I reckon we need them (or Walmart or Carrefour) to open a few stores here.

Our library has a few copies, but there is a huge waiting list. I guess I'm not the only one who thinks the best part of fifty bucks is too much for something that'll be read in two days.

Unlike the UK where I believe books are excluded from VAT, GST of 12.5% is applied to books in NZ. In fact, to keep the GST system simple, (as simple as a tax system can be), there are no new goods to which GST does not apply.

Other than that, the freight costs add to book costs, as does the effect of small market demand.

I have the book sitting right here in front of me in the UK.
RRP is 18.99 which right now is 43.66NZD so I don't think your price is too bad.

Funny you mention Tesco Koko. Before we left the UK I got talking to a bloke that works for Tesco HQ. They had been looking into setting up over here. I guess nothing came of it. Lu is heading back next year for a holiday. I'm sure if you speak to her nicely she will bring it back for you

My sister sent it over for me. Sadly, I wasn't too impressed and thought it was boring and predictable. Glad I didn't spend forty bucks on it.......

A fair point Lisa, but I don't think many booksellers manage to sell books for the full RRP these days.....

Have you looked Free shipping worldwide on all books from The Book Depository. They have free delivery world wide. OK the books are a little bit higher priced than Amazon but the total cost works out less if you include the delivery costs. We bought a few from there when we were in NZ.
