    Default 2Degrees mobiles

I say good one 2Degrees for bringing us some choice and cheaper prices for mobile calls. I placed my order for two shiny new phones and matching SIM cards first thing on Tuesday. Unfortunately, everyone else in NZ seems to have done the same 'cos their website, call centre and online shop have been swamped.

I haven't heard a thing since placing my order, so I tried calling them to see how it was going. I spent ages on hold, but finally got through to a real person today and.... they can't say when I can expect delivery. Call me a cynic, but it's funny that they had no trouble processing my credit card payment!

Has anyone on the forum actually got their hands on a 2Degrees phone and got going yet?

Hubby & I got our shiny new 2degrees simcards today but didn't order any phones as we had some we'd brought over from the UK.

Hope you don't have too much longer to wait, Koko

Good on ya Keeweegal. The phones we got when we first came over are looking very much worse for wear (if not a bit old fashioned) so I thought this was the perfect excuse for an upgrade. I can't see any numbers on my handset, so dialling and txting has been a bit hit and miss......

The 2Degrees sales people called this morning to say my order had been despatched, so fingers crossed for a speedy delivery.

Vodafone and Telecom are going to be hurting BIG TIME if they don't catch up on their pricing pretty soon. The only thing that will stop 2degrees taking over the place is that they don't seem to offer contract options as yet, only pay as you go. I also caught on the news a bit about them, and the news reader said they had opened with a special offer of half price calls and text messages. I didn't see anything about it being a special on their site, so could have been a news reader error but may be worth keeping an eye on the prices.

I'm also waiting for a new SIM, it said on their site it will take several weeks to come as they are backlogged big time, but they are posting several thousand new SIMs per day so will be as quick as possible.

    2degrees leads mobile charges fight
    11:08AM Tuesday Aug 11, 2009

The fight over mobile phone charges is gaining a new dimension with several national organisations banding together with new mobile operator 2degrees to launch a campaign to regulate termination charges.

Organisations in the new group include Consumer New Zealand, Federated Farmers, the Federation of Maori Authorities, the New Zealand Union of Students' Associations, the Telecommunications Users Association of New Zealand, and the Unite union.

Hawkes Bay-based telecommunications company Airnet NZ is also involved.

The group are putting their weight behind the Commerce Commission's draft recommendation on mobile termination rates, launching their campaign with a press conference in Wellington at 2pm today.

A website has been set up at droptheratemate.org.nz.

Mobile termination prices are the wholesale charges mobile phone companies charge for terminating calls or texts from other fixed or mobile networks.

In a draft report released a month ago, the commission recommended mobile termination prices should be regulated, and that undertakings submitted in lieu of regulation by Vodafone, Telecom and 2degrees should be rejected.

The notice advising of today's campaign launch said Telecom and Vodafone used mobile termination rates to prevent genuine competition in the telecommunications market.

2degrees' figures don't gel in mobile war
    4:00AM Friday Aug 14, 2009
    By Helen Twose

A drop in wholesale charges between mobile networks may not result in lower retail prices as promised by new mobile network 2degrees.

A campaign launched this week by 2degrees has called for the scrapping of the wholesale charges mobile networks apply to calls from rival networks.

The company blames the so-called mobile termination rates - currently around 15c a minute for a call and 10c a minute for a text - for driving up retail prices.

But the latest annual figures, as of August 2008, released by the OECD show the Netherlands, with a termination rate of nearly 20c a minute, had some of the cheapest mobile charges.

    More here.
