    Angry Hummmph!

Aussie blokes don't like Sheilas driving
    AAP | Wednesday, 30 July 2008

The vast majority of Australian men don't like to be a passenger when their partner is driving, and most don't believe women are good drivers, a new "manliness" survey has found.

In a survey of 3,000 readers of motoring mag Australian Top Gear, only 15 percent said they felt comfortable when their wives or girlfriends were driving.

Almost half said they liked to point out serious flaws in their partners driving skills and many admitted they were embarrassed.

When reversed, most men said they couldn't handle being corrected by women.

More than 60 percent said that when a woman pointed out a fault in their driving they "sail on at 160km/h in a 50 zone the car has airbags after all".

More than 30 percent said they would want to push them out the door.

Almost 40 percent of respondents said they would want to call the divorce lawyers if their partner corrected their car knowledge in front of their mates.

Australian Top Gear editor Stephen Corby said it was testament to the late Peter Brock's comments that men would rather admit they're bad lovers than bad drivers.

"The average Aussie bloke really needs to get his hands off his tools and have a good hard look at himself. If they're all such good drivers, why do they crash more often than women?"

    From here.

Remind me not to marry an Aussie bloke. I don't know if the reaction to criticism would be quite so strong, but there are plenty of macho men drivers around the States. One acquaintance's beau had burned himself badly, and wouldn't let her drive him to the hospital. Good thing he didn't go into shock.

I frequently have 'heated discussions' with my son as to the fact that women are better drivers than men. He disputes this vehemently. If that is the case then why do the kids rather go in the car when I drive? Their answer? Mum drives safer and doesn't get as mad as dad - I rest my case

Insurance for women is cheaper...only reason for this is that they are safer drivers. End of argument for all those Aussie men!

It's not their fault they're constantly driving under the influence of testosterone! Though I'm better off walking when the progesterone kicks in!

It's a great debate, Men vs Women drivers. The truth isnt clear until you know some facts, that I picked up during my time on many advanced driving courses and being a driving instructor:

It's claimed women are safer drivers because they have less accidents:
FACT: There are less women drivers, so stands to reason they will be in less accidents!

When men are angry behind the wheel, they suffer tunnel vision which is dangerous. When women are angry they suffer from distraction which is dangerous.

When young lads have mates in the car, their focus turns to showing off and they can end up driving beyond their limits. When young girls have mates in the car they actually suffer the same 'cockyness' as the boys, but in that driving becomes secondary and the focus is often removed from the road ahead to concentrate on the CD player, or clowning around and having a good time.

The real answer to this debate is: Men and women are just as good and just as bad as eachother behind the wheel, but each sex suffers it's own score of bad drivers in different flavours. It just happens to be that there are substantially more male drivers!

I'd want to see the statistics showing numbers of drivers from each gender and numbers of each who get in accidents before I accept your argument, Taffy. But yes, there are lousy drivers of both genders.

I think some of our female frustration with the attitude mentioned in MB's news article is that there are a goodly number of men who automatically get uptight at the thought of a woman driving instead of themselves. I suspect there's a control issue in a lot of cases.
