Well, at least someone is reading them. I can't ask for more than that. Stuck at the bottom of the forum, I didn't think most folks even knew they were there.

Default I dont

Its stange I know but we dont tip..but always compliment good service which appears worth more than money!

We have a very busy cafe in the summer and have lots of tourists along with 60 odd cruise ships coming to Dunedin.
Ok the girls get tips left for them on tables which they put in the tin but generally its a small percentage- I am please to say because we dont wont to go that way...
Must admit, Americans have never tipped to my knowledge.
Could be because they pay by plastic.

Locals never tip.

Staff get looked after and of the 39 ( yes, almost at 40 now) staff we have employed since we have opened they all have the customer service thrown at them from me.

I agree there Cliff, communities are so small here in NZ the positive word of mouth benefits far outweigh the financial tipping. And maybe paying with plastic as one of the reasons why they don't tip here. Everyone EFTPOS's. I've never used a card as much since we've been here. In UK they would be indignant with you using your debit card to pay for a carton of milk or a coffee. I mean, really look at you like, 'Are you having a laugh?', but here they EFTPOS a Mars bar! It' doesn't feel right to me, I still use cash, partly because it's easier for me to keep track of what I spend as well. Maybe that's another reason why kiwis seem to spend willy nilly, coz it really doesn't seem like cash when you swipe the plastic eh?

We tipped a couple of times in NZ, because the service was so pleasant and extra-good. We were followed out of the cafe by the confused server, holding our "forgotten" money. But most kiwi service was so much better than in the US, where servers expect 15 to 20% no matter what. I'm stopping now, to keep from ranting about the tipping culture.
