    Default New family member

Thought I would introduce you all to the latest addition to our family.

Please meet Gary - the giant african land snail.
My son won a competition at school and 'Gary' was the prize. He is just a baby but will eventually grow as big as your hand. He can live up to 25 years and is very easy to keep. An ideal pet for my son as he lives life at the same pace - slow

Have yet to find out what the MAF rules are regarding bringing snails into NZ - I hope they take pity on Gary and won't force him to be parted from his family at such a young age - think of the trauma he will suffer in the future

Whatever happened to 'soft, fluffy and cuddly'? And has Gary got a personality you can warm to? Can you take him for walks or get him to do tricks?

I think I'd be monitoring what sort of competitions my son is going in for in future. Heaven only knows what he'll come home with next. Still, each to his own. I hope you'll all be very happy together.

I doubt MAF will allow Gary in as I believe it's mainly cats and dogs without special permission, so don't get too attached. It seems to depend on what the pet is and where it comes from . They'd be worried about what slimy, snaily diseases he might bring in with him that would affect their own species. I doubt he'd have rabies though, or ticks, so perhaps he could try to win MAF over with his outgoing personality, charm and lively wit. Does he happen to have any skills NZ needs?

Looks like Gary will have to stay put then. My son had better make the most of the time he has with him

Maybe I can get him a rabbit when we get to NZ??

Default Gary has a new home.

For those of you who were worried about the plight of Gary I am pleased to announce that he will soon have a new home (and no, it is not the back garden ). My son's friend has been allowed to look after him for us. Not sure when he will be leaving for pastures new but we will give him a good send off and invite all his friends. Can't invite his paternal family as they probably graced someones dinnerplate in a posh restaurant .

One less thing to worry about - anyone want 2 budgies??

and there was me imagining airpets making up a special crate for Gary .. although was getting a bit worried about how you'd supply the faeces sample for them to test

Glad to hear he'll have a good home!
