Default Who felt this morning's earthquake? (4-10-2007)

So, my wife was brining my son to daycare and I was enjoying my coffee when I thought to myself, "Oh, she must have thrown in some laundry." It felt like the washer was spinning a little out of balance, making the whole house shake. So later I asked her about the laundry, and thought, 'Oh, a train.'

I'm really a noobie when it comes to this earthquake thing, you see.

We live in Nelson, and definitely felt it here -- it only lasted a few seconds. Pretty mild compared to what we've experienced before where we used to live in California.

    Large quakes shake South Island

A series of large earthquakes has jolted the South Island.

A quake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck early this morning, followed by aftershocks, including a fifth measuring 6.2 at 10.28am.

The fifth one was 50km west of Milford Sound and at a depth of 5km.

There were 287 reports of the quake on the GNS website within half an hour of the quake and it was felt from Westport to Dunedin.

Claire Hesselin was at work in central Dunedin when the quake happened, knocking over water bottles and gently swaying the lights.

I heard on the news that the quake on the 16th was felt by some people on the north island. Here at the top-of-the-south, we didn't feel a thing.

As of the 6:00 news, I think they were up to around 9 aftershocks. Queenstown apparently got shaken a little too.

    Massive earthquake shakes New Zealand

Thousands of people were left shaken following a massive earthquake tonight which was felt throughout the lower North Island and Upper South Island.

The quake, which measured 6.8 on the richter scale, was centred under the sea 50km south-east from Gisborne but was felt all the way down to Christchurch.

While the extent of the damage was not known last night, firefighters were flooded with calls about fallen power lines, building damage and activated alarms.

Newstalk ZB's Gisborne reporter Murray Robertson says police have announced they have no reports of any injuries so far, but the town is in a state of chaos. He says the main street of Gisborne is shut, as the roofs of several large buildings have collapsed, and one of the main roads into the city has a huge hole in it.

Mr Robertson says off duty police have been called into work and Civil Defence staff are at the scene. He says police are asking everyone not to drive and to return to their homes.
