Default Public (in)convenience

Matters of (in)convenience to be discussed
NZPA | Thursday, 11 January 2007

Lack of public toilets and signs pointing to toilets in New Zealand are a major concern, says Jean Hay-Smith, a rehabilitation lecturer at University of Otago.

Dr Hay-Smith, who will be one of the speakers at an international rehabilitation conference in Rotorua February 16-18, is calling for a New Zealand public toilet map. She says public conveniences in New Zealand are so often actually inconveniences, if they exist at all.

"Let's start by making our public conveniences just that – more public and therefore more convenient," she said yesterday. "How many times have you been to use a public toilet and found it closed (locked) or so unhygienic that wetting your pants almost seems preferable?" she asked.

Default Re: Public (in)convenience

Have found a few unisex toilets about. These have male/female images on the doors but are no way as nice as the roughest female-only toilets. Sorry guys, but your toilets are awful ... I know this as many a time I have had to force my way into a gents toilets, averting my eyes from the urinals, to take a toddler to the toilet as the queue has been too long in the ladies.

::)
