Don't put jumper leads on nipples - experts
16 September 2006 ?

Don't stick pens in people's necks, don't put jumper leads on their nipples ( ouch!) ?and don't shove pliers down their throats.

Health experts are urging the public not to copy emergency medical procedures shown in television dramas.

Health and safety consultant Lisa Fenech said some people were under the mistaken impression that what they saw on television could be used in emergency situations, The Press newspaper reported today.

"You can't stick a sharp pen in someone's neck to clear an airway.

"Nor can you use jumper leads to the nipples to jump-start someone's heart," she said.

Ms Fenech also advised against using long-nose pliers to try to get at something that was stuck in a person's throat.

Emergency medicine specialist Scott Pearson said if a person was breathing it was best to put them in a recovery position and call 111.

If a person was not breathing, CPR or the Heimlich manoeuvre was recommended, he said.

;D

Shouldn't laugh, really. ?If one is in a position where someone is suffering and waiting for that ambulance is taking time, most of us would try something.

Especially that if the 111 service said that they cannot send an ambulance because of changing shift? :o

Then we must really do something...
