St Bernard survives fall by landing on man
27 July 2006 ?

WARSAW: A man was bruised but alive on Wednesday after a Saint Bernard dog thrown out a two-story window landed on him as he was walking down the street in the southern-Polish city of Sosnowiec.

The 50kg dog was pushed out of the window by its drunken owner on Monday, police said.

'The dog had a soft landing because it fell on a man,' said police spokesman Grzegorz Wierzbicki. 'The dog escaped with just a few scratches.'

'The man was also more in a psychological state of shock than physically hurt,' Wierzbicki added.

The one-year-old dog, named Oskar, was placed in an animal shelter while police investigate its owners for animal abuse.

one year old saint bernard dog = 50kg!! What does the dog feed on? Beer?

It reminds me of a childhood show where this similar dog has a small barrel of liquier (or beer perhaps) attached to it's collar and the dog rescue folks stucked in snow storms (well, at least keep the folks warm).

All I can really say is ...

'OUCH!!!'

No wonder the poor man is traumatised.

Aren't St. Bernards' (the rescue dogs) supposed to have brandy in their barrels under their collar? Maybe, that's a tv advertisement I'm remembering from far back. [smiley=icon_confused.gif]

Guys, guys, I'm on common ground here. Right!
a) Really, really bad thing for an owner to do, drunk or not, if I knew him I would be round his flat throwing him out of a first floor window and making sure there wasn't anyone going past to cushion his landing
b) was he taking drugs at the time coz it's really hard to get a dog that size through the window - I know coz I can't even lift mine
c) really, really hope the dog is OK. Being bred for rescue St Bernards are very loyal, gentle, affectionate dogs, he/she could have been deeply psychologically scarred by this
d)50 kgs is perfectly normal for a big boned 1 yr old, my Newfie is just about that at 11 months old and if he decides he's not doing something like get through a window, he's not doing it!
e) which has nothing to do with this but my newfie (bred for rescuing people from the sea) and who obviously has a passion for water went for a dip in the pond the other night and when all 11 stone of him decides he's going in the pond there aint a damn thing I can do to stop him. The warden, over the other side of the pond in his nice clean trousers and shirt, mistakes him for some murderous type of pooch all on for stealing a duck or two and shouts, 'Oi you, get that dog out of the water!', 'I'm trying' answers I. The dog is currently 20 yds out in deep water breast stroking to his hearts content, it being at the end of very hot day and us having to walk a mile to get there. Now, the warden is marching his angry ass and red face round the pond to where we are and the kids are sniggering 'he's coming mum, he's coming', I'm thinking, 'let him come coz he's got no more chance of getting this dog out of the water than me.' Just as he reaches us I'm fastening the lead back to the dogs collar and trying to drag him out - 11 stone of wet dog stubborn as a mule, at great pains to surrender what he's waited for all day, me with nothing but flip flops and wet mud underfoot - sure as eggs is eggs......Him: 'Dint y 'ear me? Get that bloody dog out the water!' Me: 'I can't'. Him: 'D y tek me for a fool or what?' Me: 'You do it then' Him: 'Gimme the bloody lead'. I obediantly handed it over quite keen to see what would happen next - Hugo swam back out into the pond, the 'jobsworth' wardens jobsworth ego couldn't bring itself to let go, happy swimming dog, unhappy flailing warden, half an hour later dog's had enough and comes back, dripping, pond-weed ridden warden hands me a notice banning me from the pond area until the end of the season. 'Hugo', says I, 'looks like back to the paddling pool and ythe back garden for you mate', dog shakes 25 gallons of dirty pond water and 5 gallons of slobber all over me and the warden and sits nicely waiting to be escorted home.

You gotta love 'em!!!! [smiley=055.gif]

Stevey, Hugo's not a St B he's a Newfoundland, bred for the same purpose though - rescue. St B's scale mountains and Newfies brave the tide, can't even go for a paddle without him grabbing your hand and dragging you out! He does eat quite a bit but not fussy so... small children....stuff like that [smiley=icon_biggrin.gif]
