Police return to landfill to look for clues
25 July 2006

Police have returned to Wellington's Happy Valley tip to look for the hands and clothes of slain Wellington man Tony Stanlake after receiving fresh information.

Mr Stanlake's mutilated body was found in the sea off Wellington's south coast near the tip on July 9. His head was partially severed and his hands cut off.

Detective Inspector Mike Arnerich, head of Operation Red Rocks, will be holding a media conference at 2pm today at the landfill site.

A total of 40 police, including 32 recruits, are searching a section of the tip, about the size of a football field. They are searching through commercial and household refuse about half a metre to a metre deep.

Wellington District police spokeswoman Kaye Calder said the police had received fresh information that had prompted the search. A smaller area of the landfill had earlier been searched and some items of interest found.

Mr Stanlake's hands and clothing from his upper body were still missing.

There have been two arrests in the case.

Daniel Robert Moore, 21, of Lower Hutt, has been charged with Mr Stanlake's murder and Peter George Leach, 21, butcher, from Miramar, Wellington, charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.

Handy to have a mate 'in the trade', so to speak. It wasn't the Mad Butcher, was it? I've heard of him.

I wonder if the culprits were handed to the police on a plate.

I'm going before they get any worse.

Apparently his unpaid drug debts may have had a hand in it.

See it starts with smoking, then drinking, then drugs, then murder it seems. He should have stuck to the shandy I think.

Oh well at least the police should have more evidence on trying to get a handle on the exact circumstances surrounding the murder.

Sick lot, aren't we, but you've got to hand it to the ones who are searching, it can't be a very pleasant task, especially knowing what they might find at the end of it.

Give them a big hand folks. ?
