I've got an IT job in Welly!!!

I've been in NZ nearly 2 years now, and after a long journey, my plans have come to fruition.

I'm now a Billing Support Coordinator at TelstraClear (the 2nd biggest Telecommunications company in NZ). I'll be working with SQL, and doing other IT related stuff.

I moved down from Auckland in mid March to Wellington in hopes of finding an IT job, and getting out of my old Telecom job (Yellow Pages...nothing IT related). Ironically, I'm now with Telecom's competitor, TelstraClear.

It's a huge relief, and a gamble that should pay off in regards to work experience, city experience, better money (well, yeah, it's a consideration :icon_wink:) ....and just getting out of Yuckland (oops, I mean JAFAland. Dang, messed the name up again. I'm not doing this on purpose, really :icon_cool: ...I mean Auckland).

My original reason for coming to NZ: The IT market in Florida was overflooded with people. I was fresh out of Uni, and didn't have much experience. I figured, I may as well go and live my dream to live overseas....now I may be here for good :-)

Just out of interest, hubby and I are both in IT, did you look for any IT jobs out of the big cities?

I dont want to stay in AKL and it seems all the contract IT jobs are there at the moment. I want to stay somewhere smaller. Any experiences that you went through or advice would be great....

A little bit. I would have really liked to have gone to the Hawkes Bay (Napier/Hastings), but there wasn't much out that way.

Dunedin, Queenstown, Hamilton, and Palmerston North may be some of the better areas outside of the 'big 3'.

To get an idea you can try going to www.jobstuff.co.nz and just searching IT jobs (without a specific job area) and see how many IT jobs come up in that part of the country. I was surprised when I found more in Welly than in Yuckland.

No Way!! With rental properties of decent quality, we might be heading for Johnsonville. Looking round a place in Ngaio tomoz and gotta ring a few in Khandallah also. We're staying in Karori at the mo.
