First brush with Kiwi crime

The other day, our paper had an article on a study wherein people put more money into the coffee/tea kitty when there were posters up of eyes watching them. The explanation is that people behave differently when they believe they're being watched. We've been conditioned to respond to eyes and faces. Images of cameras didn't work as well, because the brain has to actively process the information.

Maybe this could help your fruit stand, Glenda. Perhaps the kids could paint some pretty signs with eyes subtly placed in them.

I tried to find the article online, but the newspaper's website disavows all knowledge of that article. If anyone is really interested in tracking it down, the research was performed by Melissa Bateson of Newcasle University's behavioral sciences department.

Hmmm, certainly got some ideas to think about there. Although the mandarin season is not quite over yet, there are dozens of birds having a wonderful feast out there and not much left to pick. Oranges are just ripening, so the enterprise may yet continue.
