A Fairfax shearer ticketed for not carrying his driver's licence failed to see the joke when he found his occupation listed on the two infringement notices as "wanker".

Hugh Sloan's gripe is the third incident of eyebrow-raising policework to come to light after TV3 News last week exposed the case of a man who had his job listed as "arsehole" on two tickets and a woman who was listed as "whore". Mr Sloan had just dropped off his daughter at school on November 16 and was heading back to his house when he noticed an unmarked police car trailing him.

The driver followed him for 10km from Thornbury on the Riverton-Otautau Rd before pulling him over just outside his gateway. "He said that I looked suspicious. His only reason for pulling me over was because I was wearing my hoodie."

He admitted saying a few things he probably shouldn't have. "He wound me up ? he wouldn't listen." His failure to produce his driver's licence resulted in a $400 fine.

The reason he did not have his licence with him was simple. His home in Rankin Rd near Thornbury was gutted by fire five months earlier leaving him, his partner and two children with few possessions. His licence was lost in the fire. Meanwhile, the licence had expired.

A replacement was not high on his list of priorities. "I had enough on my plate without worrying about my licence."

After a discussion he said was "quite heated" his tickets were presented to him with the word "wanker" filled in the occupation field. A New Zealand Police spokesman said had Mr Sloan laid a complaint to police in relation to the tickets, police would have had to act.
