Default Drownings in NZ

This struck me as being a hell of a lot of drownings for a country that should be familiar and at ease with the sea.

It's a bit too long to put on here so I've provided the link instead.

Aren't some of them tourists?

There was a brit tourist drowned in Tauranga this week I believe.

Not nice though is it?

I don't think the article particularly mentions tourists but, undoubtedly, some of the victims will have been from overseas. They seem to be more concerned with the Maori casualties and also immigrants who aren't used to the ways of the ocean.

I like the way he's given 'instructions' for a textbook drowning, just so we know what we're in for.

You've obviously never seen the state of the ocean around the UK, James!

Yeah, not all waters are nice and warm like in Florida. Here in No. Cal. the surfers have to wear wetsuits to keep from hypothermia. It also helps disguise them as sea lions, so the sharks get tricked into biting them.

I suppose not swimming in the ocean is a good thing for people who aren't acquainted with it's tricksiness. Every so often a visitor from the Midwest or back east drowns on the California coast, because they don't know anything about rip currents or sleeper waves.
