[b:c37e12a57d]Rowdy teenagers beware: the Mosquito is coming [/b:c37e12a57d]
01 December 2005

LONDON: A Welsh inventor claims to have found the perfect solution to rowdy youngsters ? noise.

Howard Stapleton says his device, the "Mosquito", emits an uncomfortable high-pitched ultrasonic sound that can be heard by children and teenagers but almost no one over 30.

It has successfully driven away noisy teens from a grocery store in the Welsh town of Barry and a shop in Stapleton's home town Merthyr Tydfil, making smoking, lounging and foul-mouthed youths a thing of the past.

The ability to hear high frequencies deteriorates with age, but some adults might still be able to hear the Mosquito. No one except young troublemakers appears annoyed, however.

"All I'm getting is pats on the back," Stapleton told Reuters. "No bricks thrown at me yet."

He said teenagers he had talked to welcomed the device too, because they used to be intimidated by gangs hanging around the shops. The Mosquito has turned Stapleton into a media star, with appearances on British TV and radio and interest from as far afield as Australia, the United States and Canada.

I want one.

Not that I've got rowdy teenagers bothering me. I want to switch it on whenever the kids put Cartoon Network on the TV, or when there is something [i:e7425d004c]I[/i:e7425d004c] want to watch on TV. :icon_twisted:

Yeah it weird. They had a load of teenagers in the studio and gave them each headphones and they just told them to put the phones on when they felt uncomfortable and played the sound. You couldn't hear anything through the tele but all but 2 put the headphones on within like 20 seconds. Richard and Judy couldn't stan it wither they were like 'ugh turn it off it's hurting my head'. Crazy huh hehe

I always knew Richard and Judy were trouble! If the sound only affects rowdy teens, then that show speaks volumes :icon_biggrin:

I wonder how big it is and whether it could be adapted for little old ladies to carry with them as protection. Probably wouldn?t work anyway, as the louts would dive in, grab the handbag and make off again within seconds. Might be good to prevent unsavoury youths hanging around outside their homes though. It?s often the elderly that are in most need of protection from these types. That guy?s no doubt set to make a million, at least.

Well done to him! Hurray for Wales!

Actually, young males are most at risk from yobs according to statistics. If you take the 700 people who were murdered in the UK last year, the majority of victims were males in the 15-35 age range.

The yobs who cause trouble in my local area always beat up young blokes. We've had a few fights and stuff (although it's tame where I live by uk's standards).

There are generally very few old people caught up in yob/gang or violence in general. I think this misconception is created by the British tabloids as an old person being beaten to death has more of an effect on readers.

My point was that young males might have more chance of protecting themselves or fighting back than the elderly. They'd also have a better chance of legging it away.
