Default TV guide and road code

I thought people might be interested in these sites...

The road code

I gather this rule is somewhat unique...
If you are turning left, give way to vehicles coming towards you that are turning right.

Hmmmm. This is something we're going to be coming up against soon when we have our visit down under. Will have to scrutinise it closely [img:8350fd1042]http://www.kolobok.wrg.ru/smiles/standart/read.gif[/img:8350fd1042]. Thanks Netchicken.

I just wish they'd had some diagrams illustrating some of those "give way" rules, just to make it easier to hold in my head. Their rule for a left turner giving way to oncoming, right-turning traffic is counter to US rules (in mirror image). I hear that confusion is similar for Brits. Thank goodness I didn't cause any accidents or get honked at while driving willy-nilly on NZ roads.

Yep, NZ is the only place in the world with a law like this.

I gather its unique, but it works very well in my opinion.

If you are trying to turn right into a street cutting across the traffic coming towards you, then at least you don't have to worry about the people in the other lane coming towards you who are [b:8cfcceebf6]also[/b:8cfcceebf6] wanting to turn into the same street, as they have to wait for you.

If you are the one turning left, who has to wait for the other cars turning right, you can still nip around the corner if they are held up waiting for a gap in the oncoming traffic.

All in all the time saved for the car turning right across the traffic flow is considerable, whilst the car turning left has plenty of opportunities to scoot around the corner.

i think the theory is though, that by giving way, you provide that gap thereby reducing the number of cars queueing up behind the car waiting to turn right.

I think its a great rule.

I've noticed in spain that they dont like that situation to arise. so much so that they put signs up in certain places saying no left turn (remember they are south paws in spain) so you then need to go along the road to either a round about (or a slip road sometimes) so that you can then come back and turn right without holding anyone up.

Fantastic idea.
I wonder how many accidents in Britain are caused when a person is waiting to turn right off of a main road and some berk' not watching whats going on slams right into the back of them.

Much reduced in NZ or spain I would guess.

Yes, I'd go along with that. What is it they say? 'A picture is worth a thousand words'. Seems like it's a case of 'If in doubt, give way' just to be on the safe side. Just watch the news headlines when we're down there. We're bound to screw up big time [img:98499bceb0]http://www.kolobok.wrg.ru/smiles/standart/scare2.gif[/img:98499bceb0] .

I'm getting used to the rule, but still find it a little confusing when;

a) The car turning right is in a right turn lane with a solid white line in front of him (her).

b) I am wanting to turn left but I am being closely followed by a car(s) that wish to go straight ahead. If I give way to the car turning right, I am holding up those cars behind me and often the car turning right makes no attempt to turn. I guess here I still have the right of way ??

Having been here for 6 months I guess I will have to soon think about applying for an NZ driving licence. That will mean the theory test. Where did I put that Road Code ?

A) 'If in doubt, give way'

B) 'If in doubt, give way'

:icon_wink:

The theory test is quite easy. The part that got me was towing stuff. There was a dispraportionate amount of towing related questions, especially since most of us won't go around towing stuff.
