i am fond of the word futtock.....can be used to describe a particularly frustrating person, especially good if in non-swearing company....e.g. 'blimey..he was such a futtock...' also to describe the act of dithering or 'futtocking around' generally dawdling and procrastinating!

That reminds me of how in our family we use other innocent words instead of swearing e.g. when bug**r starts to form we change it to budgeriegar or bumble bees and when fu** starts to form it is changed to fudge cake. Sh** is changed to sugar puffs. So* to soap suds. It seems to help to make the replacement longer or two words instead of just one short word. Gets a smile from anyone listening!

I remember someone trying to cover up her need to use the F word by saying 'Oh, fishhooks!!' Sounded quite satisfying when said in the right tone of voice.

We talk about futzing around - I don't think it's a swear word substitute (though it could be). It means fiddling with something, as in "I futzed around with the printer, trying to get it to work".

I hear tell that Brits use the word hoover as a verb synonym with vacuum. In our house, hoovering is what we call rapidly sucking down food. Dogs excel at hoovering things off the floor, providing a service similar to the original Hoovers.

Yes we, too, frequently refer to 'hoovering' as speedily despatching a plateful of food. No doubt down to mimicking the vacuum cleaner's effective sucking action.

Nerdles - Two minute noodles (or Ramen Noodles). They aren't exactly noodles, but they are "nerdles"

Gucki - I forgot the spelling. It was when I was young and couldn't pronounce "Pepsi"

You seem very passionate about your nerdles, James, as you've mentioned them twice now. Hope you're not living on them. As the Bible says 'Man cannot live by nerdles alone'.

These 2 words are linked to my recent holiday in NZ.

‘Spatulated’ – smacked around one’s bodily parts with a kitchen spatula.  Original members should remember and understand this one – new members can read about it here if they are desperate enough to want an explanation.

‘Johnned’ – Various household projects that have been blighted by a so-called DIYer and badly so.  By coincidence, the previous owner of our house was called John.  

I heard a good turn of phrase on the radio this week...........

"Cranky Pants" - to indicate that someone is in a less than pleasant mood.

In context......" Don't speak to mummy today kids....she was out last night and got up with her cranky pants on today, and a bad head"

I can vouch that whilst this phrase is mildly amusing to the by-stander.....in the eyes of the wearer of the aforementioned pants......its a red rag to a bull kind of phrase. Use it at your peril!

Imaginary optical aids for ladies through which ugly men begin to appear attractive after you have drunk too much cider. As in "What? Ethel! You fancy him!?! You must be have your cider visor down ".
