Did you take it's parking spot?

When we lived in Tauranga, there was literally hundreds of wasps buzzing around the flowers on the trees just feet away from the house. Not once did they ever bother us, or even come in the house. Wasps dont seem to hang around rubbish bins either...

Maybe the SI wasps are not as nice?!

Lots of wasp species in the world, thank goodness they're not all stingers. Sounds like Moggy found one of the cranky ones.

Do the wasps come out a certain times of the year like they do in England.
If so Mum will not be visiting then, she has a phobia of wasps too.

I wonder if MiniAg, or an agricultural school has any information on wasps. I suspect they are warm-weather critters, just like most insects.

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread as I'm sure it's very dear to your hearts. It appears that no one has mentioned the existence of the dear old cockroach in NZ which, I believe, does make itself known around older homes. Although they look like they mean trouble, they don't seem to be any threat to humans. They just look awful when they catch you unawares and can smell pretty dreadful when there's enough of them in an enclosed space. This we found out when we returned from a 2 week holiday and they had invaded a bathroom which, luckily, had the door shut tightly. There must have been 20 or 30 of them covering all surfaces and, boy, did they stink. To contain them I had to launch myself into the middle of them and shut the door behind me so none got out. Took forever to sort them all out and the mess was incredible.

For those of you who aren't yet acqainted with them:

(I hope this link works as I haven't done this before.)

Oh the carnage! I envision you emerging covered in cockroach goo, triumphant if not a bit crazed from bloodlust.

We're in the middle of garden spider season here. Though I love them for the bug-catching, I have to constantly watch out for webs when I go outside. I can't stand having insects & arachnids in my hair & clothes.

Is anyone else of the same opinion as me, that flies and mossies these days appear to be almost immune to sprays intended to see them off? I can fire off at least 4 rounds of spray at close quarters and they don?t even pretend that they?re about to turn up their toes. They look as jaunty as ever. I feel the spray is doing us more harm than them. Perhaps it?s just peculiar to here, but it?s getting me down, the amount of energy I?m expending chasing them around with the can when it?s all to no effect. I?m sure I can hear them sniggering, just to add insult to injury.

Hope they're more obliging in NZ.

hehe I swear you build your posts around the latest smilies you've found

I never use the stuff, prefer swatters. NZ might not have such a problem with the increased spider population. Just don't kill those daddy long legs that annoy you so much and you'll be right. hmmmm might in turn encourage whitetails in the house to hunt may flies down :icon_sad:

You just can't win. Remember those minging tape things people used to hang from the ceiling that are sticky. As a kid I remember thinking one was liquarige (eh...how the hell do you spell that :question :question). Mmmm nice.

Sorry...dmmit I've lost my 'tangent' smily. grrrr

Yes, we've got one up at the mo but the flies seem to avoid it like the plague. It's hanging in the kitchen doorway and I seem to get caught up in it more than the flies. And it's 'liquorice', a rather odd word.
