What was that Dawn... Kokopeli could you tell me where you saw these prehistoric creatures from hell??? North or South Island? Public showers?? I shall be having nightmares...by the time I get down to Hamilton I might be smelling a bit ripe WG and Taffy, as there won't be a chance in hell of me getting into a shower with those things around while I'm in NZ!!!

Can't say I've ever seen anything like those little nasties.

BG, you just need to get a list of the hotels that Kokopeli stayed in and avoid them like the plague!

Hole in the paddock? Why would you want a hole in the paddock when we've got a perfectly good roof you can sleep on? It'll be the middle of winter, but at least you can take shelter in the chimney if need be.....

I can see Taffy and I will have to set up a 'newly-arrived MoveToNZ members' bedroom at this rate (Only joking, MB!).

Did some googling and found out that those pseudoscorpions are tiny. Don't worry Dawn and Bermy Girl, chances are you probably won't notice them. If you wear them - keep the specs off!

Now these white-tailed critters ... Every area and house is different, but I've only seen two up here in the warm Far North - one dead on the deck, and one that was very quickly dead.

I think, if these beasties have the power to inflict pain, they should at least have the decency to make themselves highly visible so we stand a chance of getting them before they get us. I don't go for all this covert stuff, sneaking around in people's clothes and beds. That's just not playing fair.

Sounds good to me, but I'm not sure Shellbda would handle that, not sure she likes heights! At least in the hole in the paddock we would be protected from any winds...

Tiny terror's a scary thought

Portia labiata

Scared of spiders? Best you stop reading, because tucked away in a lab is a spider that hunts other spiders, learns from its mistakes, looks before it leaps and might actually be smarter than mammals.

Dr Simon Pollard and fellow spider biologist Dr Robert Jackson have been living and breathing super-smart arachnids at the University of Canterbury for almost 30 years.

Portia labiata is their star, and the female Portia is smarter and more deadly than the male.

She looks like a speck of dirt and moves, says Pollard "like a baby robot learning to walk".

But when this spider gets hungry, she also gets horribly, scarily smart.

"In a way jumping spiders have the eyesight of a primate and the cunning of a small mammal," Pollard says. "And Portia seems to be especially cunning as it preys on other spiders, including other jumping spiders, which is like lions hunting tigers."

Portia remembers rhythms she's tried with particular spiders, and knows what's worked and what hasn't. She knows some spiders spit - and remembers to keep her distance. When hunting spitting spiders, she will sneak around for hours until she's in a position to drop down right on top of them.

More here .

We've seen pseudoscorpions on both islands and found one in our house when we moved in. They always seem to be in the bathroom though.

Our NZ wildlife book says they're pretty common, although not much is known about them. They don't bite apparently, although they put up a good show when you try to catch them. They wave their claws at you and sit up on their tails like .... well ..... a real scorpion

If it's any consolation, they're pretty small - about 1cm all in. Just big enough to crawl in your ear while you're sleeping Dawn!
