Default Cars, Cars, Cars!

Hi Tom,
I would say, going by the photo above, that you would have an endless supply of restoration work!

Those cars have certainly seen better days... although they are probably in better condition than the ones in the UK.

Dont know about the bakery thing though, but you never know your luck! There are certainly many types of 'foreign' food outlets here!

Default prices

Hi, We have got our residency visas and are coming out to nz on 16th Dec. How much did your mitsibushi galant cost as that is the sort of car we would prob go for. Another question a bit more urgent as we are packing up soon, is, is it worth bringing out your TV, DVD player and video player? Would be grateful for advice.

Hi Clairebear,

It depends how good your DVD & video players are, cos you can get basic DVD players out here (transonic make) for $79.99. It's a multi-region and does the job, so unless your DVD players all asinging and dancing, it's probably best to leave it. THat said, if you're planning on shipping other stuff out here, you might as well throw it in the box with the rest of the stuff. (We bought a cheapie DVD player to get us by until we get the Panasonic DVD/Surround Sound system sent out in a few months. The reason we're getting it sent and didn't sell it is cos we only bought it in January and we wouldn't get anywhere near what we paid for it if we sold it. Then we can use the Transonic one in another room or something...)

As for the TV, we sold ours as we heard that some TV's don't work over here - I think the picture works but not the sound or something? TV's are pretty cheap - we bought an un-named 14 inch TV for $149.99 and we're looking at getting a 21 or 25 inch nearer xmas for around $400 ish.

Most electrical stores (and the warehouse) have always got offers on their stuff, so you can usually get a good price on things over here.

Hope this helps,

Jodie

Having recently tried to sell a car for a friend, don't worry about having to buy one. You can't give them away!

I sold a 1992 Mitzi Lancer, with 90,000k for $1600!!!! And that deal took a month to find someone willing for!

The streets are littered with vehicles for sale sometimes, and here in chch, we have weekly auctions where with a bit of care bargins can be easily had.

BTW ditch the dvd player, hold out for a DVD writer so you can record TV programs onto DVD's. Dick Smith has a basic one for $350, but panasonic have an awesome one, dropping rapidly in price with a hard drive in it.

You record to the HD, then edit out the adverts etc, then burn the rogram on a dvd. Its the next generation of technology, they are still pricy at around $700, but well worth it .

Vehicle Registration (Similar to Road Tax) and Warrant of Fitness (MOT) are fairly similar to the UK, but you need a WOF every 6 months, instead of 12. Petrol at the moment is around $1.10 per litre for unleaded (around 45p)

You can get a lot more info at http://www.ltsa.govt.nz

I want to know if a certain cute little vehicle is still available new. They appear to be used as a small delivery vehicle, 2-seater, shaped in profile like a quarter circle. It may be a Nissan. I love them and want one if we get to immigrate. Any info?

Hi,

Do you mean the ones with the 'frog eye' headlamps? If you do, then yes, they are still here!
