Yes, you can work whilst waiting, by getting a work visa/permit.

Hey Taffy!

Well, now you're famous in the NZ Herald, I shouldn't imagine you'll have much difficulty in getting in now - being a celebrity and all!

Now to introduce myself - my partner Darren & I are in the throws of moving out to NZ on working holiday visas with a view to getting job offers and then applying for PR. (I'm a web designer and Darren's a programmer so if anyone knows where to point us, that'd be great!).

After a few months of selling our flat, posessions, leaving jobs and winding up my company, we've now booked our flights and are heading out to NZ on the 18th July - at last!! We're looking at settling outside of Auckland (I'm liking the look of Tauranga at the moment...) mainly because of the extra points, but it all depends on where the jobs are.

We can't wait to get out there, and we're doing the family rounds at the moment saying goodbye and things (although they're all already planning their visits!) and then we'll be off!

Any advice or experiences would be great to hear.

Hope to see you out there soon!

Jodie
:)

I read about a family who moved to Tauranga in a book 'A New Life in New Zealand' about the family who were on the programme 'Get a New Life'. Apparently Tauranga is a really nice place to be, although it has the reputation (which it is desperately trying to shake off) of being a retirement town, lovingly refered to as Gods waiting room and Home of the newly weds and the nearly deads! Beautiful area, and one we will be looking in to ourselves if property prices havent become too steep by then!

Default ...from the states

Hoping to finish nursing school, then make my way to NZ. I'm not a young man, anymore... but I love change, and this is one I'm up for. I've obviously got a while to wait, so I'll be checking in and wishing I was one of you who are already there, or on your way. Also.... my wife is intrigued, but not convinced. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I posted something like this under the "Motoring" thread, but can anyone tell me about motorcycles in NZ? I'd want to ship my bikes over when I come. Both are Japanese makes, although one (Honda) is built in the US... and is "modified" from stock. I'm hoping to hear about noise restrictions (if there are any), helmet requirements and licensing requirements... that sort of thing.
Thanks much!

Default Kiwi missing Home!

Hi i am a Kiwi born in Auckland, and then lived in chch right up until i was 17yrs and moved with my family to Charlotte,North Carolina,USA.
I have been here 8yrs now....feels like forever!
I still really miss NZ and have family and friends there still. I am about to get married to an American and we both would like to come and live back in New Zealand.
I don't know exactly when this will be possible cos it is so expensive to fly from here but hopefully in the next 2yrs sometime.
So if anyone has any advice or places to go to find out info regarding my American husband living in New Zealand with me, and what is required i would love to hear it. I don't know if he can apply for residency or if he has to continually update a visa.
Rebecca

Default The 'old' Introduce yourself!

kia ora everyone

I am also here after reading the NZ Herald

I am a youth and community worker, trying desperatly to emigrate to NZ. i have recently been out to NZ (and Loved it) i am desperate to return and like many others trying to work my way around the NZ immigration process. Like taffy i was getting ready to submit my forms and feeling very close to the finnish line when it all changed.
i have decided that my best option is to get a job offer, apply for work permit and then submit EOI form. But yet again i am hitting brick walls as the jobs that i need to apply for are not intersted if i dont have a work permit, even though i can't get a work permit without the job offer. Now that i have changed tak i am getting a little further. I have found the direct approach is at least getting my application seen and shortlisted.
I have decided to take a leap of faith, myself and family are selling up and going out to NZ on Visitor visa'a am hoping that i will get ajob offer and i can then apply from within NZ.
I am wishing you all luck, if there is anything that i can do to help anyone out please feel free to contact me. I have come across a lot of people willing to help me, so would like to pass it forward.
Jackie

Hi Jackie,
Welcome to the forum! I think you are probably taking the best route.. going on holiday and finding work when you get there. As long as you can financially support yourself for a few months, it is getting more like the only way! (unless, of course, you are super-qualified and people fall over themselves to offer you a job!).

Good luck, i'm sure it will be great for you!

Hi Taffy
I see like me you are also checking the immigration site every fortnight to see what points are being pulled out of the pool.
Have you looked at the charts as indicates that the majority of applicants are on shore and not off shore like us.
I'm just hoping that when i get there i get the job offer without to much trauma.
I noticed in the picture you have children, like myself. The longer i leave it the harder it will be for my teenagers. Plus im not getting any younger dont want to loose any more points because of age.
How are things going for you on the job front?
Speak soon
Jackie
