Bees Day 7 & 8

Posted 07-05-2008 at 04:35 AM by selchie
The bees are great. I inspected the hive Sunday, and found that everyone is very busy, including Boudicca (the queen). Lots of comb, eggs, nectar & pollen. I probably would have seen larvae, if I had looked at some of the "older" frames. I was so careful to not bother them too much that I really didn't inspect very well. I think I'll go back in today or tomorrow. I'm wishing I'd gotten two hives, and might get onto the swarm list, so I can collect a free one. I just need to get some more hive parts. Soon I might have to get more boxes & frames anyway, considering how fast my bees are building comb.

Karin took a couple of movies while I was inspecting yesterday. She wasn't too happy about that, being a bit bee phobic. At one point she flinched when a bee bumped into her. I'm getting so blasé about that, even when I'm not suited up, that I had to remind myself that she isn't. But she does show an interest, and asks how they're doing. She even comes out to look at them as they work.

I looked in again Monday, considering what a half-assed job I did the day before. The weather was cold & overcast, which isn't ideal for inspection, because most everyone is home. It was very crowded, and many got quite touchy when I blew to move them. I was very thankful for the veil, because they headed straight for my face.

But I found lots of plump larvae in a couple of the first frames they built on. Queen B & Co. must have hit the cliche'd ground running. They have about half of the frames built out already, which seems awfully good.

Bees! They're a bit scary eh? I love to see them busy about their work and I appreciate how important they are and I would never hurt one but I have to take very deep breaths and endeavour to keep total self control if they come near me to prevent myself batting at them.

I've been stung a couple of times (by wasps I think) and both times I had quite a severe reaction. Both times I was on holiday just sitting on the beach in my bikini and a 'whatever' unbeknowest to me had landed on my inner thigh. I got up to stand and squashed the intruder between my thighs of all places! Within minutes though, I was feeling wretched. Shivering uncontrollably with cold sweats and vomiting. This continued for several hours, followed by several days of the sting area being vair, vair inflamed and painful

I've never been to the Dr about it and I don't think either of the culprits were bees but friends have said that maybe I need to carry one of those bee sting antidote thingys with me. I've heard tell bee stings are worse than wasp stings, but I really don't know
