Introduction - from a dreamer!

Posted 16-07-2008 at 05:54 AM by Green7709
Hi I have been a guest for about a year reading all the wonderful comments and info about NZ (and how to emigrate there) which has really helped me through some wintery dark days, even in July in the UK! I am very excited to have finally plucked up the courage to introduce myself. My husband and I have two boys (12 +14) and we are finally visiting NZ for the first time this xmas. I am hoping the family will fall in love with NZ as much as I have already (without even seeing it!!) and will want to move there. I am really keen on the Christchurch area. Is there anyone out there who has attempted such a life changing move with two older boys and can help me with their experiences of how they coped...education system etc? I would love to hear from you.

Hi Green7709 and welcome to our happy throng.

I'm sure you'll all have a great time in NZ because the kiwis are generally a friendly bunch which makes everything seem better.

If you want advice on Christchurch, you'd be better off posting queries on the main forum. We have several members from that area (and some waiting to go shortly), but I'm not sure how many of them read the blogs regularly because they are tucked away and sometimes overlooked.

Don't be shy, jump in and enjoy!

Hey there, and welcome to the forum

Mother Bear's right - most of the action around here is on the forum, the blogging section is mostly for people who are having a particularly bad/good day to spout off

Bet you'll have loads of questions between now and the time you visit, so fire away

Thank you for a very warm welcome! I would love to know (Nickydwuck..) how you sold NZ to your boys and daughter and how difficult it is to drag them away from their friends! I am assuming that you have been on holiday to Chch before and the children are just as excited as you are?! And Welshgirl how are your kids doing? My boys are off school for the summer now and they have spent the day in doors (it is grey and overcast) on their computer games - I am so disappointed. They are too big to play football in the street and everytime they go to their local park with a football or cricket bat, other local boys in gangs intimidate them! I could let them wander around town a bit but they would soon be bored of that. We will look at some organised sports days but this will cost me £25 a day each! Would it be much different in NZ? What do young teenagers do there during the summer? I love the idea of Chch in that at least there will be a beach close by (i think) and skiing in the winter. Is it the same in the summer holidays for all teenagers around the world and am I being idealitic about Chch - better weather, nicer groups of children, activities that do not cost a fortune...please can you let me know. Thank you

Hi,

I have 4 kids, 3 of whom remained in the UK with their dad (my ex-husband) when we came to NZ (we obviously didn't do a good enough job of selling it to them ). They are 3 boys, aged 17, 15 & 13 and they are not particularly happy living with their dad and his girlfriend, but they won't change their minds

On the other hand, Taffy and I have an 8 year old daughter who is thriving in NZ. She misses home and her family at times, as we all do, but she has settled into NZ life well and has all the makings of a wonderful adult! She currently has a better social life than I do, with all her extracurricular activities (karate, netball & drama) and all her friends. There is no reason for kids to be bored in the school holidays here, there is always something to do for all ages, and usually at a reasonable price

It is a very outdoorsy country - you'll find most kids (depending on age) outside, playing in the mud or kicking a ball around or going off on some exciting activity or other! A lot of the schools run camps during term time as well, which involve things like kayaking, mountain climbing, biking, etc.

IMHO, NZ beats UK hands down for bringing kids up

Hi,as motherbear said, sometimes blogs go unnoticed.
We moved to chch in jan,and love it.
Yip we are near the beach, acyually its on the other side of the road from us.
The snow fields arent too far away, though i havent been to them yet,as im too scared to go round them as not a fan of heights. lol
I have a 16 yrold daughter, who said that if the boyfriend from Glasgow was here, she would really like the place.
he was here for 3 weeks holiday and he loved it too.
She isnt at college yet,and wont be enrolled until feb.
She was supposed to start school on monday, but ive decided to let her go to college instead,as i did feel it might be too awkward at her age,and she did say she didnt want to go back to school.
We thought it would be better for her to make pals, but she really wasnt keen on going.
Suppose at 16 it is quite a hard age.
I have a 7 yrold who loves the place and settled no bother.
I also have a 19yrold in Glasgow, whos visisting at xmas, hope then he wants to come and stay, once his college course is done.
Anything else just ask away
