Tell him to go and see the carpentry tutors at your local trades college. I think it's AUT in Auckland, but a quick search on the 'net will see you right. Anyway, the tutors will have good connections with the local trade companies because part of their role is to find placements and jobs for their pre-trade students. Get your partner to go even if he's got a hatful of carpentry qualifications because the tutors will at least know which companies are recruiting and they will know the names of the people he needs to speak to. It is often said that NZ is a club. You just have to squeeze in through the door.
