Only agents normaly charge that fee eg the 1 weeks rent plus GST
You may want to look on trademe.co.nz

Then when you get the rental they normally charge a bond 2 or three weeks rent and then rent in advance as well like 2 weeks but both added together can't be more than 4 weeks

eg 2 weeks bond 2 weeks in advance
or 3 weeks bond 1 in advance

Now the bond has to get paid to the government agency make sure that they fill out that form and you will get a receipt from the agency at the end of the rental you both full out a form and you get it back unless there is a dispute if they will not sign the form you just send it in and if they do not complain you will get it back after some weeks if they complain and you can't resolve it you or them can take it to a tribunal to sort it out

You can also shift the bond from one house to another if you like.

A couple other tips when you first move in read the power meters and call your power company with the readings else you may end up paying for someone else's power also when you leave do the same call then power company read the meters and tell them is the final reading
